Thanks everyone for the kind words! It's good to see a hard project like this is well received. You make everything worthwhile! And if you are interested, I was using PETG material on my LULZBOT 3D printer. PETG material is stronger than PLA, and although PLA surface finish looks nicer, PETG is not too bad either. My initial prints were done with a setting with lower temperature, which made the layers not stick too well. So I raised the temperature for later prints.

I'd like to know how many hours total this project took - might make me feel better about just spending 3 months on a project where the ultimate outcome was changing a "4" into an "8" (but of course the trick is knowing which 4 needs to be changed). If you think forward engineering is hard, you should try reverse engineering sometime - much harder, but way more interesting and engaging!

@@sonicgen20 3d printers are stupid cheap now, but regardless you could easily modify a thrift shop lantern. The part I see most people struggling with is the soldering and coil winding.

hey mehdi, just wanted to say - you have no idea how much I appreciate you include so many of your failed ideas and designs. It definitely adds to the comedic effect, but it also is such a relief for other DIYers who struggle with the same issues. You sometimes just need a reminder that the main point is not giving up, just trying again and again until at some point it works out.

So true! Many channels just show the final product: clean and perfectly functional. While they explain how it works, they do not include all the failures and various mistakes made during the actual development. I absolutely love it when projects like this show the whole engineering process. In pursuit of an end product, there will almost always be mistakes and revisions and deviations from original designs, and that's important to capture. IMO that journey is just as, if not more, gratifying than the end product. Awesome project, awesome video!

i feel like the only mechanical improvement would be to get a slower fan to make them look more like they are "flying" rather than being in a vortex... probably easier said than done

@@Preinstallable = Unfortunately, there's little that can be patented. The circuits been around for decades, from everything from wireless chargers to induction heaters. I even used the circuit for my "Propeller Santa" outdoor Xmas display over 20 years ago. The decoration creativity is unique, but can be sidestepped.

Mehdi is such a multitalented person, he designed every single thing by himself, from the electrical, mechanical, even to the aerodynamics. Mr. ElectroBOOM, I have pondered this for a while and this is what I found intriguing about your video format: It's not only that the moment your experiments blow up being funny, but you convey a very important message to your audience without even being overwhelmingly imposing about it-- "If you ever fail, laugh it off and try, try again!" Thank you, I have been very bad at picking myself up in the past, but watching you include all your failures in a video (albeit in an intentionally comical way) makes me realize that there is always a chance beyond the first attempt. Please carry on.

Yeah, it looked good, and it makes a good starting point for upgrades. If someone could make another version and suspend them in a clear oil and pump fluid around they'd move slower and more life like. Would be a cool v2.

What a beautiful project! What I like most of all is that you don't hide how complicated it is, how many iterations you needed to go through, and just how much sweat, tears and grit went into it, even for someone who is well-versed as you in electronics and 3d printing. I respect you a hell of a lot for NOT trying to make it look super duper easy peasy lemon squeezy.

08:00 Looks like you need one of those magnetic, flexible headbed plates EB. They're weakly magnetic so its easy to peel a corner up and as the plate bends the print should, theoretically, pop off.

Hjacking a top comment with no replies to say: The complete lack of a shot in total darkness has absolutely triggered me beyond belief. My disappointment is immeasurable and my day is ruined. Seriously what were you thinking uploading this without a shot of this in the dark? How are shots of it in the dark with a light shined on it somehow more of an obvious thing to do for you than a shot in the ACTUAL DARK....? 6 different demo shots in 5 different locations and this isn't included? (Yes, I am autistic)

@@TastiLead Shooting moving lights in the dark is unexpectedly difficult without proper equipment. Maybe he did shoot said dark room footage, but the results weren't satisfactory, so he chose to omit them in the edit.

Two suggestions! First you could send the coil power through the two remaining brass rods. The ends of the coils could be soldered to the brass where the brass passes next to the coil. Then coat the rods with clear coat or conformal coat so that nothing shorts them out. The second suggestion is you could add a second LED in the opposite polarity since they are diodes they will act as tiny rectifiers. That way the "flies" will be producing light for the full wave instead of only half of the wave. You could sandwich the capacitor between the LEDS. Also hot air and solder paste is very helpful for tiny SMD components.

Good ideas, but I disagree with the second LED suggestion. Polarity will keep reversing as the coils move about in the chamber and the second LED will reduce the flicker effect and add weight to the element. Though they would not reduce the current draw as they are opposing polarity.

@@drwhoeric Nope, polarity is reversing anyway 96000 times per second because it's AC. So the movement of the fireflies doesn't affect the polarity of the waveform the LED sees.

@cooperised @drwhoeric Exactly! The frequency is way too high for the polarity change to produce any visible flicker. Infact, Flourescent lighting flickers every time mains AC changes polarity, or 120 times per second for 60 hz AC. That flicker is barely perceptible to only the most sensitive people. However, the phosphorescent coating does continue to glow dimly after you shut power off, so the contrast of each flicker isn't as great as if you had a 120 hz monitor flicker between black and white screens. The flicker of the "flies" is actually created by the orientation of the fly's coils. When the fly coil is perpendicular (horizontal) to the alternating magnetic field, alternating current is induced in the coil to power the led, but when the coil is parallel (vertical) to the alternating magnetic field, no current is induced in the coil. Also the angle of the coil will vary the intensity of the induced curent, so at a 45 degree angle (diagonal) the induced current is half as intense. However, a negative effect could potentially be that the additional LED changes the resonance of the entire circut, but this is easily fixed by remeasuring the resonant frequency and adjusting the driver.

Problem with the 2nd led is that it would never stop glowing it would alternate between the two depending on which part of the magnetic field is induced, it wouldn't look like a firefly

I think with a second LED it will be much worse if it works at all because you basically shortcut the capacitor if you allow both directions.
