In this video I make the Centre Height Gauge from Hemingway Kits, a very useful tool for setting the height of lathe tooling. The kit includes all the bar stock, castings and other hardware needed to complete the project as well as some excellent plans and build notes.
I shall be giving this tool away to a subscriber 8 weeks after the video goes live. To be in with a chance of winning it 1. Make sure you are subscribed to the channel 2. Leave me a comment saying that you'd like to be included in the prize draw. I will select someone at random 8 weeks after the video goes live.

Finally I made there. So much to care about these days. I've been convinced to make one of these. Bar stock of any kind as long it's metal, is not to come about unless you pay a fortune. That is most companies require you to buy full length ~ 6 m. Add to that taxes/VAT that makes it very difficult to buy bar stock cut to length as a hobbyist. So Hemingway is where I look too. Despite they are in the UK and I live on the continent. Tell that to legislators!

Hi Nick, thanks for all these Hemingway Kit builds. A few years ago they had a 10% off sale and I bought quite a few. Sadly medical matters intervened and I've only now been able to get round to building them. I do recommend the Model Engineers Workshop books by the late great George Thomas who drew up the designs for many of these tools.

Another great tool build. I would love to be in the draw for this please. The knurling tool is now done apart from the hardening. Most of my problems were down to my tooling as discussed previously and the lack of a rotary table which would have made things safer! My only real issue was the adjusting nut which the drawing calls out for 1" blind threaded hole and a Tommy bar. The adjustment screw is 1.5" so you can't adjust the full capacity of the tool. I made the adjusting nut 1.6" threaded 1.5" blind hole. It may be that I missed something but worth checking out so you don't have to make it twice 😉. Thanks for the videos!

About the cut outs in the blade, if done right you can use them as a rest fore your wire gages when measuring your single point cut threads. Rest two on the top one one the bottom, obviously you’ll have to hold one end of the bottom gage wire but it is infinitely easier that way.

I do believe the point of the cut out in the bottom of the blade is for flatness. What I mean is it is hard to keep a long surface flat. It is easier to flatten a part with minimal surface contact. I have worked with several grinders, but the guy that was thee most accurate, always placed his part across (2) .25" gauge pins. That was the only connection to the table. (Only for finish passes. .0004" at a time)
