Great video! Lots of different technique involved here. The map turned out really well. When I first saw you add greenish paint to the border, I thought NOPE! but it worked at well in the end. I found this video format very relaxing to watch. The music was a good fit. I'd like to see a bit more real time work to get the feel of the technique involved and then speed it up. It all looks to easy when you speed things up. I hope you do more like this one.

Really awesome work! I had the itch to make rolled leather maps before, but the fear of screwing it up and ruining a whole split made me back off of the idea. I just don't have the control with a swivel knife yet and I certainly don't have the texture tools shown here. But, I think I might give it a go on a bit of scrap in the future, just to see how it comes out. I've used a woodburner kit on leather though, and you really need a light touch and a sponge soaked with water to make those work, for anybody thinking of trying that technique.

I wish they still taught how to correctly hold pencils, pens, forks, spoons etc in school. The reason most people struggle with cursive and art where control is needed is because they never learned this in school as a kid. I remember how hard it was for me to learn the correct way, but im sure glad someone cared enough to teach me. I see grandparents already that cant hold a pencil correctly and it just makes me sad

@danielreach5618 I love this piece and am starting my own project based on it. I have a pyro kit, but I was wondering with the amount of antiquing you did, did you find that you effectively covered most of your pyro work? I'm concerned about doing a lot of laborious pyro work and then having it cancelled with antique!

So wouldn't you want to antique or paint it before you seal it? It seems counterproductive. It looks wonderful believe me - I'm just asking though because normally it's the reverse…the paint and antique cannot hold to the leather now or absorb into the pores
@Just_Mike27
@Just_Mike27 Жыл бұрын
Do 1 for yourself and compare it to see. Best way I can Tom of to answer your question
@DanielReachCreations
@DanielReachCreations Жыл бұрын
Antique: it depends on the look you want. If you antique without sealing, it will tint the leather. If you seal it first, it acts as a resist and keeps the leather close to its original color. The antique just settles in the low spots. Paint: ideally yes, you would paint on unsealed leather, but I use sealer between paint layers all the time and have never had an issue. Great question!

I'd have liked to see a shot of the whole map when it was done, but otherwise this was great! Thanks so much for sharing. Do you think the shaded details could have been done without a pyro kit? Or was that critical for roads and the mountains and names?

I love this project and the video! I love the music as well, but usually I would prefer audio narration of the steps (text is good as well, but I retain the info more with audio). What pyro kit are you using? I have seen wood burning kits but I don't remember ever seeing a leather specific one. Great video and keep them coming!

@KAZExNOxSAGA

How do you prepare the leather for stamping? I use proper vege tan leather, water it unitil it stops absorbing, then stamp while I keep adding moisture. However, I still have to hammer the living hell from my stamps for them to leave a mark.
@DanielReachCreations
@DanielReachCreations Жыл бұрын
So there's two factors at play. Quality of leather. Moisture content. If the leather starts out dry and stiff, it's going to be tough to tool, and that's what you run into with the economy leathers. I dealt with it for years. Bout all you can do is properly case it and hope for the best. The way I case it...Submerge for 5-10 seconds, wipe off excess moisture, let sit in a plastic bag for 1-2 days. That's exactly what I did with this project.
