Making a Leather Mousepad
I received an order for a leather mousepad, so I chose to use a beautiful piece of 8oz veg tan that had a lot of nice natural markings. I lined the bottom with black dyed veg tan and used a black thread, so the mousepad can be used on either side for different looks. I did some tidy painted edges and simply oiled and waxed the natural veg tan for a finish that will patina beautifully over time.

This is just like me and dad at the workshop when I was little. He is doing something I don't understand but he is also not explaining anything or teaching me anything.

You have definitely improved in the last 5 years. Your fit and finish now is incredibly nice. Your videos are all somehow cathartic, very enjoyable and I usually learn something new. Thanks for sharing your journey!

So, it's been more than 2 years. How has this pad held up? Do you still use it? Pretty sure it works really well with an optical mouse.

I love your videos. I'm always looking for projects for scrap leather (though, for me, neither of those would be considered scrap). I'm always looking for new takes on key fobs, coasters, and other little things I can give out. Any of those would be cool. Keep it up, I'm learning a lot. Thank you.

I liked it, but it would be good if you mention the things to be used; as in the last you had put something which changed the colour. So if you just mention by text would be nice.

It looks like Eric first applied Feibing's Mink Oil Liquid (#FIBMOIL00P008Z), brought it out into the sun, and then applied Feibing's Aussie Leather Conditioner (#AULC00T015Z). Hope that helps.

Thank you for thisi great video. I just starting with my own leather working. I have a few questions: 1) What kind of brand sewing thread are you using and what the thickness ? 2) What kind of prong stitching chisel are you using ? King regard Peter

Peter van der Plaat use tiger thread, it is the best thread you can get! There are many colours and dimensions like 0.6, 0.8, 1.0mm... Goodsjapan.com has very nice prongs, I would use 3mm or 4mm if you need some help please contact me

Eliezer Gonzalez so he put some oil on it first (neatsfoot maybe?) then left it in the sun to darken the leather, just like getting a suntan! Probably left outside for a day if not longer. Hope that helps

Would have been nice to cut a stich trench into the leather so the stiches do not sit proud of the surface of the leather. now the only portion making contact with the table surface is the small crowns of the stiches. This method will also cause premature wearing off of the crowns of the threads and a less stable mouse pad. I am also not sure how well the optical mice will pick up locations on a plain smooth surface like leather. Most tech mouse pads have a pattern on the surface that allows the optical mice to locate on it. Just a few points I noticed on the video. I love the look of the pad .. Leather says durability.
@Corter
@Corter 5 жыл бұрын
we hammer down the stitching and the entirety of the leather bottom makes contact with the table - haven't had a problem in almost 10 years of making them, no broken stitching reported and optical mice work fine :)
