I am so envious of you and Anne and the things you get to learn there! I would so much love to take a class and learn to do some of these things, but I'm afraid my wheelchair can't get into the shop, so I'm pretty much out of luck. Your bench is so awesome, I love watching you build. :)

Back during the depression of 1930's People made furniture out of hickory branches, some was bent wood and some not, but most had the bark on the wood.. The bark lasted on the legs etc for as long as we had the furniture. The bent wood would be tied to itself to facilitate bent members of the furniture. HERE is the secrete. WOOD harvested in the winter when the sap has gone back into the roots will not loose its bark. I Think because the cells of the wood shrinks and more or less bonds to the sapwood. I know this works on hickory wood because because the furniture and it was 50 or so years old when I last saw it. Maybe it would be worth the experiment. Cut a tree in the winter when the sap goes down in the winter. It may only work in colder parts of the country. So maybe Matt Cremona could help there.
