In this Unity multiplayer game devlog, I used Blender to created a low poly player model (more like a monstrosity) and I removed my client prediction & reconciliation systems.

In this devlog I modeled a low poly player model which needs to be burned at the stake (100% deserved). The face is an absolute abomination and will definitely need a major overhaul soon, but for now this project has turned into a horror game :P
I also removed my client prediction and reconciliation systems, which means you can once again walk on boats without experiencing extreme jittering. The controls are slightly unresponsive now, but I'm ready to move on to some actual gameplay. I'll reimplement some sort of solution to make it feel responsive at a later point in time.

that player model actually looks really nice, I wouldint reccomend using a 3d playerface, instead I would use a drawn face (Much easier to animate, also may not look as demonic) you wouldint add the face into the actual playermodel texture, I dont know very much about how unity handles decals and such but i'd just add a image to their face in the actual game and then change that image for animations. Also the player doesint have to have perfect proportions. you could do literally anything you want with it and people probably wouldint mind, so if animating that more humanoid design ever gets difficult dont worry about making the player look a little off! Great video, loved the little extra scene at the end. Super excited to see how the harpoon gun might work! (Potentially using it to grapple other players to you like a fishing rod in minecraft 1.8 combat?)
@tomweiland
@tomweiland 3 жыл бұрын
The texture thing may happen at some point-along with normal maps it could potentially work quite well. The main reason I didn't do that so far is because, well, I've never actually made normal maps before, and also the rest of the game doesn't use textures :P I'm not sure yet if you'll be able to use the harpoon gun on other players, but it will definitely double up as a grappling hook (and it'll probably become one of the main ways to get around fast, especially when trying to board other ships). Glad you enjoyed the scene at the end, I had a good laugh at that one myself 😂

In case you try to make any more humanoid models, you can use Blender's Humanoid Rig as a reference (I think it was in A -> Bones/Rig -> Humanoid), that way you can keep your own style and already have your character pretty much rigged

Hi. I my opinion, you should try to let the players dictate the position of their avatar(client authoritative movement). This way, the players won't experience any latency. Of course, you will have to implement server authoritative movement and client reconciliation later to deal with potential cheaters. In my opinion, it's way better to play a very responsive game that can potentially have cheaters than a unresponsive game with no cheaters. Quick tip : when the players move on the ship, they should send their position expressed in the ship's coordinate system (see : Transform.InverseTransformPoint) instead of their absolute position. Otherwise, the other clients will not properly see other players walking on the ship, because of latency. Also, I am ok with timelapses.
@tomweiland
@tomweiland 3 жыл бұрын
Client-authoritative movement is something I've considered, and might end up going with, although I've been a bit averse to the idea just because I don't like giving clients the ability to decide anything :P

I understand your point at 3:30, but as times goes on and on and you have to implement many many new things - you reach a point at which you don't want to re-invent the hot water anymore. This fact changed my way of perceiving the usage of reference, guides and tutorials not as a "method of cheating", but a possible solition to save time. Then the next thing is how to apply that resource to solve your problem, which is the creative part - it is not simply copy-paste. My point is, that In the end, time is the most important resouce and one's perspective on things change with time (kinda obvious, but sometimes one does not think about it).
@tomweiland
@tomweiland 3 жыл бұрын
It's not that I consider it cheating-it's more the fact that if I have something to trace I _will_ trace it, and it kind of robs me of my ability to add my own style/twist because if it doesn't look like the reference image, I feel like it's "wrong".
@stoykomarinov
@stoykomarinov 3 жыл бұрын
@@tomweiland Oh, I see. I kind of misunderstood part of your point. You meant that you have the tendency to "follow guides strictly", so to say. If you really feel that using such resouces decreases your creative input on your own work, maybe viewing them from purely inspirational point might help? But yeah, It's quite subjective.
@tomweiland
@tomweiland 3 жыл бұрын
_"maybe viewing them from purely inspirational point might help"_ That's what I try to do, I usually have reference images up on my second monitor, just not in Blender-maybe I should've mentioned that :P That way I can't trace it and it prevents me from tossing creativity out the window.

What did you think of this devlog? Was it too timelapse heavy?
@imogen__
@imogen__ 3 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't worry about it being time-lapse heavy. If the only new visual details you have to work with for the video is the modeling process then it is surely fine. I assume there are going to be a good few months working on art assets (in total) so this probably won't be the last time-lapse episode :) Don't worry. Also, when the game is nearly done, I think having these records of art asset development will be funny to go back to. I plan on keeping a bunch of my super-basic-pixel-art in the game as easter eggs because they are all hilariously bad.

Hey! I know it's a bit weird... because you don't do many tutorials, but could you sometime, if you want and have time, make a city-builder tutorial? There aren't any tutorials on youtube and I can't figure out a few things. Waiting here for your answer!
@tomweiland
@tomweiland 3 жыл бұрын
Making tutorials on how to create a fully fleshed out game would take forever, and between my pirate game and the new networking solution I'm working on I don't have too much time, so unfortunately probably not. Have you watched ThinMatrix's recent devlogs? They're not tutorials, but he shares a lot of insight about how he solved various problems that he encountered.
