Today I make a 2 piece wand with a spiral blade and a twisted brass wire grip inlay. It's one of the more complicated designs, but quite enjoyable to make. I hope you enjoy watching how it's done. And if you like this wand or want to see more wands, be sure to check out what I have available in my Etsy store: nemesisgear.et...

Never worry too long..as long as interesting. You could do part one..part two.just wire. That was enjoyable

I'm surprised how simple a technique it was in the end to put the spiral into the maple. Thanks for showing! The wand looks awesome!

16:38 I have a natural hemp stalk that is all twisty and windy with a small root ball that acts like a handle. I want you to do something special to it to make it look more wandish. I can send photos.

Very nice.

It looks good. The only major change I would have made would to have the spiral look like it is wrapping around the tapered blade of the wand.

What rpm do you use to turn the maple?
@mythimpressions

I turn at 2000 RPM for all my wands but slow it down for finish work like sanding.

Hi, nice work! So did you shape those flap wheels or is it normal wear from use, and could you do that technique with them chucked in the lathe?
@mythimpressions

Thank you. I did start a groove in the flap wheel by just holding a scrap of metal in the center to wear it in a bit. Once I have a center track, just doing numerous wands will keep wearing the flaps right. I think these wheels are MANY years old, so they will last quite awhile. I suppose you could try using a drill to run the wheel with the wand it in lathe, but holding it steady would be hard. I turn the wand much slower than the lathe would run, so I find it much easier to have the wheel stationary so I can manipulate the wand against it. I'd have to use 1 hand on the drill and one to slowly turn the wand in the chuck if I did it the other way around. Doubtful I could be as accurate. :D

@@mythimpressions thanks for the reply, makes sense. I guess you could put the flap wheel in a Jacobs Chuck and mount that on the lathe….just thinking out loud as I don’t have a proper pillar drill😉

Are those special grooved flap discs?
@mythimpressions
@mythimpressions 7 ай бұрын
They are just standard flap disks, but I use a piece of scrap metal and wear a groove in them to start so the wands have a place to ride. The groove just gets bigger over time.

What gauge wire do you use?

Honestly I don't remember. I picked up a couple of small packages at the hardware store when I was making more steampunk items several years ago and just had then sitting on a shelf. I believe they are about 1mm thick, but the packages are long gone so I don't know the exact gauge. If I remember right, they were in blister packs in the same section as the wall hooks and such, but again, years ago.

I love your wands and your videos but the correct term for a wand isnt a blade , its called the shaft , you have your pomml , the handle and the shaft of the wand
