I make these types of shovels all the time with old shovel heads people just chunk to the metal scrap or just leave around to rust away.Metal detecting is a hobby for me so ill keep it cheap and simple,why pay 60+$ for a shovel when you can make one that can do plugs and dig the same way for cheap or no cost at all?Plus your not going to break your back from bending over all day with those tiny shovels!Have fun and happy hunting!
Test dig link near the end of the video.All this time i had the wrong link as my test dig video..it was this one lol!
I would not recommend doing this with a flat head shovel.
Check out the dig test video its short and sooo sweet wut wut!!

Thanks for the video. I had bought a D handled drain shovel a couple of years back for field digging and after watching your video, I went home and cut mine into a shape similar to what you have shown. It took me an hour from start to finish including painting. My friends said it looked like it came from a factory and it worked amazing. And I only did it because of how easy you made it look.

your welcome man i figure i would make this stuff because no one has to go out and buy a 100+$ shovel to dig up simple stuff when you can just modify something to use thats going to do the same thing.I just recently found a small spade shovel and im going to make a mini one of these..cost..0.00$ woot and thanks for watching!This was a nice tempered shovel that can take some abuse.Cheaper shovels may bend some depending on the ground,older shovels like this are the best so keep your eyes peeled on some quality shovel heads.

I was thinking of welding one up using a plowing disc from a harrow, it has that curve and hardened steel & go down to the local steel yard and get some 1" chrome moly tubing.

You sure sold me on this idea. Those old shovels are a dime a dozen at flea markets or estate sales for around $5 to $10. It sure beats shelling out $50 to $90 for one !!! Got the tools and going to make this happen !!

The best way to make one hands down old shovels are good spring steel and have a scooping camber built in . a lot make them with no camber out of stainless which are useless , the old shovels or even old plough blades make the best ones.can save your off cuts for a hand digger, weld the two off cuts together with a pipe handle.

First rule of thumb, measure twice and cut once, you messed up the first measurement. Right side you marked 1 3/4, left side you marked 1 1/2. Was that intentional?
@diggingga6197
@diggingga6197 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I had no precise measurements I just eyeball it with a ruler I just needed lines to cut.
@i_darrin_t_it5716
@i_darrin_t_it5716 5 жыл бұрын
Didn’t know they made safety toe flip flops. What’s next...steel toe sandals. Your cutting technique is also dangerous. The grinder handle should be on the other side so the wheel is away from your body as it cuts so if their is a bind and a jump it doesn’t slice your wrist off.

nice video but why wear hearing protection ...oh wait I see the antenna your just listening to tunes and gloves if your gonna wear flip flops ... those Chinese work boots as someone called them made me laugh ... am I the only one who uses the wrench to tighten. the nut before using the grinder ... nice idea for the side teeth I'm digging that for sure for my next shovel build .

Thanks for the inspiration. I just did the same with an old rusty shovel. Did you need to re-heat treat the steel? I was thinking the heat from grinding might have removed the temper on the steel

jms no its still the same length.It won’t bend its pretty hardcore shovel head.Though I did make one from a flat head shovel,it did well in soft sandy places but when my brother got ahold of it he kinda dominated it😂.I have a quick test video on how the shovel worked though.

martyisnuts aboutdiggin depends on the shovel head.The one I made this out of was a old shovel but it’s shank is strong and the metal is quality.I still use that one to this day.I have made a couple in the past but the steel was from a cheaper shovel and resulted to bending and I did one out of a flathead shovel and I don’t recommend flatheads with this project
@martinstreasurehunting
@martinstreasurehunting 6 жыл бұрын
Digging Ga I'm sure the old shovels were made of a better gage steel. May try it sometime if I can find a good old solid shovel.

martyisnuts aboutdiggin we go through shovels like candy here where I work.Usually the tip is gone so I just take the ones we don’t need no more and make a shovel or two.And when I’m out and about metal detecting I’ll find a good one laying around sometimes.

the best shovel to use is a sharp shooter .. all you need is shorten the blade alittle an put a point on it an some teeth .. also to improve it i got some foot peg from a old three wheeler cut them in haft an wielded them to the shovel to give more footing

by cutting the blade straight you basically ruined any strenght in it. it will bend pretty easy
@diggingga6197
@diggingga6197 2 жыл бұрын
you would think,but in this case of this round nose shovel you are wrong.I did one with a flat head and that one did bend.The steel on this is pretty durable and still use it to this day and been through many trials.Thansk for watching.
