John Heisz - I Build It

While I say this is a full build, I haven't made the drawers that will go in this island yet. That will be a project video on its own in the near future.
I've been planning this project for years and went through several different designs before settling on this one. My kitchen is fairly big (for such a small house) and it can easily accommodate an island this size.
The top is 60" long, 38" from front to back and a full 2" thick. Made from solid cherry, it will naturally darken with age and get even better looking.
The base cabinet is made mostly from 1/2" maple veneer plywood with some solid wood for the trim and corbels. The corbels (support brackets) are designed to match the doorway treatment I did going to my basement. They are decorative and functional, as they support the overhang. I'll be making a pair of fancy solid wood stools as a future project to go with this island.

Nicked mine, cut was not too bad, but the blade took a quarter size of skin off. Bled for 3 days, took a month to heal, less feeling. Use a push stick now

I've never seen an Island cabinet built, piece by piece, in place like that, plus all the extra goodies with using plywood where hardwood is typically used. I thoroughly enjoyed this. Masterfully done. Love the corbels. I have never had much long term success with polyurethane wood glue, the construction glue is a no brainer, it works as long as it's needed to work. The stuff that looks and pours like honey is not stronger than wood after two or three years. It gets brittle, the joint fails. I've redone those failed joints with modern wood glue, they've gone close to ten years and are still strong. I sincerely hope they've reformulated the stuff to perform better. Thanks John, beautiful island.

great tip with the "tapering blocks". Have you considered doing a home tour video? It's been a while since you've done a video like that, kinda like the yearly updates you used to do on your home reno channel. And you've done a ton of work! Island looks amazing John.

You should engrave QR codes to a hidden part of all your home products that link to the respective KZfaq video. That way, whoever eventually buys that house can see all the details, thought process, and hard work that went into everything.
