In today's video Patrick Adair designs a ring made out of Mokume Gane. Mokume Gane is a composite of nickel silver, brass, and copper. It is made using techniques, that were perfected by the Japanese, in order to create a metal composite with patterns that resemble wood grain.
Vegas Forge creates this beautiful exotic material and they were nice enough to send us the Mokume Gane to make this video.

Really glad to see you getting more production value. However, I'd definitely cut down on the high energy looping music that's used over and over and the large number of cuts and camera transitions. I love seeing your work and these kind of edits just detract from what we're all here to see. Though I understand you're likely trying to appeal to a larger audience. Either way, you still make gorgeous pieces and I'll be enjoying what you make for as long as you're here making them.

Just finished watching this video. It's awesome seeing the how far your channel has come. I'm an avid spinner collector. Which you may or may not know has companies that use the exact materials featured in this video. I believe you'll get a better finished product with Mokume when you flame it rather than etch it. Damascus on the other hand shines when etched and polished. Just food for thought. Loving your vids. Keep up the great work.

Btw I always forget but the expanding ring mandrel is brilliant. I will probably get one in the summer when the workshops finished. Wow! It looks like wood! How is it to wear? A lot of people are sensitive to nickel. I would like to see how this works out because it is really gorgeous looking!

Very cool. I've had a little mokume that I've been waiting to work with, and this definitely inspires me to give it a shot. I'm wondering if you treat this with anything for people who may be more sensitive to metals like copper or brass, since they could be wearing it very often (maybe constantly). I've read that the skin reaction for some people is very unpleasant, but I've also heard of products made to coat such metals to make them less of a problem. Great video, very enjoyable to watch. You've come a long way from the dremel times! Keep it up.

I made a stainless steel nut into a ring, and because of your suggestion on micromesh pads, I achieved a mirror finish without any metal polish at all. That stuff is amazing. So, I want to know what lathe you would recommend for someone starting out?

I would do one with the Damascus and use this as an inlay to it. You'd have to make it two pieces to fit the inlay in but the differences in color and tones would make for an interesting ring.

Hi, not sure if you'll see this, but with this material, being made out of brass and copper, is there anything you can do to keep it from oxidizing? I machined a solid brass ring for myself while I was in trade school, and of course it oxidized black and green on my finger and lost its polish over time. Thanks for the excellent videos!

Do u ever take the shavings from these rings and put them all together form into a resin block and then turn yourself a ring from that? All those different metals in a ring like that might look really cool. Be neat to see.

Is it possible to mask off areas that you don't want to be etched? I think it would be interesting if, for example, the beveled area was still as shiny as it was when you first took it off the wheel.

I gotta ask, what keeps the copper & brass from turning your finger green? I know the nickle will be fine on the skin, but copper/brass? I have made damascus steel rings, but they rust quickly due to the salt on the skin, so I stopped. I want to try and make this copper/nickle mix. Looks like fun.
