I needed to make a new furnace, because my old one is toast. I used insulated fire brick that can withstand temperatures up to 1430c and a cement that can withstand temperatures up to 1600c. For the whole furnace I used 25 bricks and a bit more then 10kg of cement. The furnace cost me around 170 euros.

Very nice planning and thoughtful execution while performing the assembly. Your fuel manifold with that large blower is totally exceptional. Could you make a video on how to assemble a fuel manifold to duplicate yours?

Nice job. Consider lapping the lid and top of main part together or with a concrete stone or something to make them flatter.that way they'll seal better and keep you and your things nearby off to the side cooler.

Don’t know how much it helps now, but it seems many people couldn’t guess how he made his crucible. Looks like steel pipe with welded plate to cap off bottom and a piece of angle iron as a spout to assist pouring. Along with bolts on the sides for his tongs, which were likely forged himself.

Now this is what I'm talking about. Make it so that you don't lose in the end. Propane still cost money it maybe cheaper but the thing is to save at every turn. It may not make you rich but you won't endanger your life. An be prepared for the chance that you will have extra material. No matter how hard you counted there s a chance you will have extra so no dumping it on the grass or a plastic container just because it has water the stuff is still very hot. Thanks you Loader.

Would it be possible to crush the pieces of fire brick into small pieces and mix it in with your metal casting sand? I think it would make the aluminum stay liquid for a longer time, which would mean less imperfections in the cast.

If you intend to hot cut an old oil barrel for this kind of project, make sure it is clean and gas free on the inside before you start cutting. Drums with combustible material inside often explode when cut with flames or grinders, with fatal results. Be careful!

rancidoverwelm At a glance it's just mild steel, looks to be five inch .25 wall with a quarter inch plate stick welded on for the bottom. You can use steel to melt all the way up to copper. Some people just use an old cast iron Dutch oven.

it was quite dangerous cutting the barrel with oil residue inside. it could have took fire or worse, vapours could have exploded... please next time rinse the inside with a solvent if soapy water doesn't do it then fill the barrel with water to remove any vapours before emptying it for cutting ! otherwise nice video, and a very nice furnace in the end

Propane will actually dig into the porosity of the metal and stay there for quite a while. Safest way is to fill with water when you cut it. Bicarbonate and acid will fill it with co² which will displace fumes.

Is it better to use fire brick as a liner than refractory cement? Fire brick is so expensive. Another thing. I’ve never seen this Blakite stuff. I’ll try to research but if anyone has a good like to purchase this stuff I’d really appreciate it. Thanks for the great vid!
