Making a Pair of HEAVY DUTY V-Blocks | Shop Made Tools

We need a pair of V-blocks that are heavy duty and easy to setup so we’re going to make them! This has been a project on our list for a while because the standard cast iron V-blocks just aren’t handling the setup of larger and heavier jobs that we do on the milling machine. In this video we show the step-by-step process of turning high tensile steel plate into a pair of heavy duty parallel V-blocks. First, we need to do milling and face cutting to get our surfaces machined true. We then machine a slot and drill holes for key steel that will be used to align the v-blocks to the bed of the milling machine. We also drill and counterbore the holes that will be used to bolt the v-blocks onto the t-slots of the machine. These shop made V-blocks are not only heavy duty and solid but will save so much time in setups!
In this video we are using:
- Hafco BM-63VE Milling machine

As a professional woodworker of over 40 years. I could make them out of wood. There is a big difference in making them out of steel and to the tolerance you work to. I have always wanted to try turning wood. And now I would like to try using a lathe after watching your videos. A good friend used to be a tool maker. He was good on a lathe. He used to make the patterns, or whatever you call them, from which they produced Hornby model trains. He used to do a lot of spark erosion jobs. Haven't seen you do any of them yet. You can create some interesting shapes. Probably all done by CNC machines these days. Enjoying your videos a lot.

I would suggest you drill and tap a couple of holes on each of the V blocks, so you can use it for a positioning end-stop when you're doing repeating parts. Use a piece of scrap and a couple of bolts to cap off the end of one v-block. I was amazed by the surface finish left by the boring head, never expected that! Great Job!

To not be able to buy something suitable of the shelf for most would be a serious issue , for you na ya just go make exactly what's wanted . To cap it all you made it look so bloody easy . I guess knowing the versatility of your machines and the tooling you have only adds to the variety of choices on how you can do a task . Can't use the fly cutter no worries use a boring head . Cut a straight line with the centre point and then cut it perfectly with a bloody angle grinder ... I couldn't get it that close with a chop saw lol. Great video as always and a pleasure to watch courtesy of Karen's perfect camera work . Thanks guys

"Check the spacing of the T-slots on your table - if you don't you may have a job that doesn't fit..." I bet that was a lesson hard-learned! Amazing tools - amazing skills - amazings videos - I've never worked in a machine shop in my life and yet I find this channel endlessly fascinating. Cheers from a fan from Canada!

It’s all about shaving time off the jobs but still producing a quality job, these V blocks as you say are going make setting up quicker. Outtakes brilliant, the minute the camera gets pointed the sync between brain and speech just turns to mush😂

Hello Kurtis and Karen , Just had a whopper 70th birthday yesterday, 11/30... went to work at 1 am till 4 am, came home, went back to the shop 1 PM till 8 pm, got home and was too tired to even have a bite of the cake my wife made for me,,,,it was good, had some tonight, welding aluminum frames for RedBull displays I am building....over 300 37 mm [1.5 banana] welds in each.... verticals, flats and overheads, butts [with bevels for max penetration] and fillets...thank heavens for spool guns for aluminum. the first few were done with TIG that my boss wanted because it looks good, even though the flat welds get ground flush..... and then he decided the fillets needed grinding too......give me a break......but he is the one paying......6063 Square tubing 3.2 mm wall Looks like a good show tonight, I hope you all are doing great ...... Best Wishes from the other ' Sunshine State' , Paul the Old Weldor they are calling me now...... p.s. give Homeless a hug for me.......
