Making a Plaster Wedging Board - Setting up your pottery studio - Pottery for Beginners

A hard, absorbent
surface is perfect to work on when making pottery. The surface needs to be made
of something that the clay won’t stick to. You can use natural
stone, untreated hardwood, a HardieBacker® Cement Board
or a concrete board.
A slab made of
potter’s plaster is ideal because it is highly absorbant and
it’s heavy so it won’t move around while wedging. You can also use it to help you reclaim your clay.

I made one of these and all is well, thank you for the instructions! However, it moves all the time when I wedge, which is very difficult. Any ideas on how you stabilise yours? I’m thinking of adding a non stick mat under it, but thought I’d check with the community first 😊

A non-stick matt could work. You could also use a damp tea towel underneath to stop it moving.

Hi Kara, I've made my own wedging board thanks to your tutorial here. I'm waiting for it to set. In the meantime I want to know which side you use to do the wedging. The bottom has feet thanks to the plastic box and the top isn't 100% smooth thanks to tiny bubbles that rise to the surface just before it goes hard.

I'd use the smoother side, but it's your call. Why not try both? Maybe try sand the feet off?
