I made this DIY metal statue out of a few iron pieces soldered together with the silver soldering technique. Still a long way to go before I master it but it was really fun and I learned a ton of stuff doing it!
Tools and materials I propose:
Silver solder: amzn.to/2yyKHpl
Propane Torch: amzn.to/2pMEGRX
Respirator: amzn.to/2RKTfCr

Great video but a fire brick takes the heat away from the metal get a soldering block. That reflects the heat back into the metal 🔩👍

Can you do this with a soldering gun instead of a torch? Does it work the same?
@ScrapwoodCity
@ScrapwoodCity Жыл бұрын
I don't know. It definitely needs a lot of heat. Not sure a soldering gun can reach that temperature.

Not to be that person...but I think for that silver content you are getting the area a bit too hot. Usually a faint dull red is what you want versus cherry red/orange. Also you should just let it cool down gently and fully, don't quench silver solder.

Cute! Why do you quench the metal? Why don't you just let it cool down?
@ScrapwoodCity
@ScrapwoodCity 5 жыл бұрын
To save time! It gets really hot with this technique!
@elenin.3228
@elenin.3228 5 жыл бұрын
The thing is that quenching metal interferes with its inner structure. Ferrous alloys become harder and gather stress. Your piece can become distorted or even crack. In metalurgy controlled quenching is used to make tools harder but always in combination with tempering to relieve stress and avoid brittleness. Critical temperatures vary for different alloys.

I don't think these are an issue in this case. If I was making a knife or a tool yes I should consider these things. But this was an art project with simple soft iron parts!

Welding melts the metal parts, and also the filler rod, together. Brazing or soldering only melts the solder, which acts like a glue to the parts. So, less heat is needed.

A non-defensive, honest answer. That's quite refreshing, Your metal was too hot and you used way too much solder. Look up "TheCrafsman" (no letter "t") here on YT, and watch how he silver solders. BTW - you'll love his voice. Thanks for the vid.
