Making A Scrub Plane From A Rusty Old Handplane

In this video I convert a rusty old Stanley no.4 handplane in to a very useful scrub plane. I needed to spend some time restoring it, removing rust, and making everything work again and then I can put a camber on to the blade to allow me to hog off lots of material!

It;s planing, cats and frogs - another really useful how to video. Thanks Keith, you've given me the confidence to try this on an old plane in the shed that I thought was beyond help.

Oh dear! I'm in danger of turning into a Safety Sally! But I winced when I saw you trying to undo the seized screw in the cap iron whilst holding it in your hand, expecting the screwdriver to slip and pierce your palm. I was always told that hands should be behind the sharp bits! What a relief when you later held it firmly in a vice to do the job. Congratulations on ending up with a very useful and functional tool after all your hard work. BTW, my dad always used the end of the lever cap to undo that cap iron screw.

Nice video. Have done a few of these myself, including turning an antique wooded coffin plane into a scrub plane. I suspect you have an impact driver in your recently expanded collection of Milwaukee tools. If so, try that for breaking loose those tough screws. Works a treat for me. This is like restoring a car to be your daily driver.

Good project and an ideal use for a reclaimed rusty mutt. Would add, having tuned quite a few old iron planes, that a badly worn, out-of-flat smoother, one worn convex, can be a useful complement to a line up of dead-flat planes by sharpening carefully and adjusting finely to chase that last bit of tear-out in an otherwise smooth surface. The decision to do that with an old plane saves a tremendous lot of flattening effort.

I agree with a concave curve on all plains blades but not as much but in regards to stability and cupping I think a wide board cut and rejoineted will be better in a hot kitchen but you could argue that with you removing so much material it moved as much as it going to For hard as nails u could have made an end grain board sorry if this is coming across as nit picking think ur style is refreshing and good you grown ur buisness in a very slow abs steady way Have u every looked at the Clark slow speed sharpener like a tormek Thanks again

Warm or hot vinegar works faster, also try hot water and citric acid crystals to get rid of rust

Cracking restoration. I’ve done a number 4 plane but not as well as you. I want to spray it but haven’t yet and wondered if you need to cover the plate where the frog meets it before spraying so it remains metal on metal, Or do you not think that’s necessary? Thanks

Nice work Keith. Lived the finish on the handle & front knob. Have you seen locktite for an instant hard finish of lathe turning? You should look into electrolysis for rust removal. Only attacks the rust not the metal & less effort ofh lots of sanding dry dust to bare metal. An old toothbrush is good for getting into nooks & crannies to clear out gunk. You can also make the plane curve edge more aggressive to flatten out quicker, personal preference. Are you sure you're not allergic to cats??

I've not tried loctute as a finish, I wasn't aware that was even an option! Haven't tried electrolysis either yet but hope to some day. And yes, I do have an allergy with cats unfortunately!

knots are tough on the plane irons, but if it's sharp enough and you take a light enough pass, it will go through them

Sorry silly question time , does the blade with the curve you shaped into it now leave a channel shape in the wood rather than a flat surface ? Sorry if this is a stupid question I just thought the blade should be flat/ square??

The blade is cambered to remove wood more quickly ,then you would smooth it out with a smoother.

Yes it does. It's designed for rough work to remove lots of material quickly - a smoothing plane is then needed to get a better finish 👍
