This tutorial shows how to make a silver and copper locket resembling an old book. This tutorial also details making a hinge and features mixed metal. I can see a lot of potential for variations of this basic idea. I would categorize this as an advanced piece. For materials, I used 28 gauge sterling sheet, 18 gauge sterling round wire, 22 gauge sterling sheet, and #4 sterling low dome half round. I use a bit of 24 gauge copper sheet as well. As always, I use hard silver sheet solder and My-T-Flux from Rio Grande. As this piece features a hinge, I used a bit of easy solder to secure the pin.
I enjoy sharing my knowledge with others, as I've taught people for most of my life. This hobby turned into a fun side gig for me for years while I taught public school. I love suggestions and hearing about others' experiences. What is your favorite project? What kind of tutorials would you find useful? Scroll down for information on my new Patreon!

This is such an unbelievable work of art! I am blown away and thankfully I came across the expression „to pickle“ in connection with silversmithing before, so I do not think you have odd cravings for some sour cucumbers anymore. It took me a while, I must admit. 😅 Thank you for your amazing inspirations!!!

Thanks Jayanthikanderi! This one took some time, but mostly not too difficult. Hinges take a little practice, and if you watched it all the way to the end, you saw that the clasp was problematic, so I would do that different maybe. I appreciate your nice comment:)

I was just thinking of something like this! I was thinking more of an old Bible with red cabs forming the cross. Probably add a black patina to give it that Gothic look.

As I said in the video, I should comment on the clasp issue:). When I was taking pictures at the end of this project, I put a small piece of 18 gauge silver round wire through the hole in the front piece of copper. I then bent it into a 'U' shape around the copper tab and squished it tight against the copper. Following this, I cut it so it is just a linear bump of silver projecting up from the copper tab. Once I did this, it pops nicely into place and stays there, while being easy to pull open.

Hi Chad! Thank you for this follow up! Would there be any way you could post either pictures or a quick video showing the new working clasp? This intermediate silversmith would so greatly appreciate it!

My mom has a gold book that ha six pages. Each page has a name and date of birth for her loved ones. She use to wear it on a charm bracelet, but since has it to just wear around her neck. I love this idea. As much as I love jewelry, my passion is books.

You could use bent wire for the clasp with a ball on the bottom that the wire clips onto. That's how my moms book closes.

Ahhh, English teachers. That's why you talk good! 😅 Chad, when you anneal, do you find that your annealed metal is softer if you let it cool naturally or when you quench (in water)? I like this project. Thank you! 🌺 🌺 🌺

Hello Flying Chef:). I usually let it cool part of the way, then get impatient and quench to cool the rest of the way. Seems to do a good job. Suppose I should be scientific and test to see if there's much difference, but I never have. Glad you like the project.
