Making a Simple Kindling Splitter from Scrap Materials / Beginner Welding Project

Splitting firewood can be dangerous sometimes because your hands are close to the blade especially in the winter when you're using gloves or even when dealing with hard logs.
To make my life easier I made this kindling splitter from scrap materials I had leftover from other projects and some salvaged fence parts. the diameter of the rings is 20cm so you could use it also for splitting smaller logs.
This simple project requires just a welder and an angle grinder it is also ideal for someone who wants to practice welding because of the variety of welds.

Such an easy design for us to follow. I finally can weld something for myself now that you gave me a great idea. I can use it for kindling too, but I mainly want it for spoon blanks. Cleaver idea bending the steel in your vise jaws!

You could do some Heat Treatment to the Blade for long lasting performance.

Not really. Mild steel has not enough carbon content to be heat treated.

Is the idea of only tacking on the sharpened piece of blade for easy removal if it needs sharpening? Very simple design that seems to work great! I really liked your bending technique for making the circles. Is that 1/4" thick or 3/16" flat stock? Thanks

Yes it is, but it holds up quite well and a bit of dressing it up with a file can be done with it in place. Yes the circle is 3/16 stock

Sehr beeindruckend wie exakt du das Bandeisen am Schraubstock gebogen hast! Die Schneide am Spalter solltest du aber härten, sonst ist sie bald stumpf und die viele Arbeit mit der Feile war umsonst! 😉

Köszi! Nem tudom hogy érdemes e ettöl nagyobb átmérőben megcsinálni mert azért egy bizonyos méretű “rönk” felett már annak a felemelése illetve a rá gyakorolt erőnek is jóval nagyobbnak kell lenni.

I think if you put it upside down you can use it without the hammer and its own weight should brake it, or you could spring load it

Something wrong with that angle grinder mate sounds a bit rough 😉 great project 😁 never thought of bending steel that way I always used 2 bolts tacked to the bench but your way looks much quicker 👍

Just mild steel cutting edge? A piece of tool steel heat treated would be better for this part. Nice idea and design though.👍

Thanks! Yup that would be an improvement for sure. We will see how it holds up, although i wouldn’t call it a cutting edge technically because it just forces the wood apart with the. 2mm thick edge.

Ha! Honestly i think that a huge part of my subscribers stopped watching my videos because they were annoyed by the sounds. Nevertheless i like to change up things but i can assure you that they will be back!

Well... I can only speak for myself when I say that I actually find it enjoyable when you play with the sounds, and I know it takes time to edit those videos and also do the work. And I would watch your videos with or without the funny sounds because i appreciate your attention to details and the great quality of your builds. @@Ollaris I dunno. Perhaps you should invest in a new mic, or else your tools are starting to get worn out. Maybe a better angle grinder is in order, because that screeching was not normal.
