Making a Simple Spoon Carving Knife That Anyone Can Make

The Small Workshop

This is a simple project that anyone with a dremel can make.
I wanted to carve a traditional wooden spoon but I had trouble carving it with a chisel. So I decided to make myself a hook knife.
But, since I don't have a forge or a proper way to heat treat steel, I cheated a little by making it from an old wrench. This way the steel is already in the right shape for a spoon knife and properly hardened.
The whole project is basically sharpening the ring of the spanner, and this can be done using a rotary tool, like a dremel. As handle I've used an old file handle I've picked a while back at the flea market.

@stupidfuckingworm
@stupidfuckingworm Жыл бұрын
@@laternevercame it's not a hack, he's showing an easier way to make this specific tool. normally you'd need to do a LOT more to make this. a dremel is not going to give you the same results as a carving tool, and will wind up wearing down your dremel tip, whereas this can be resharpened whenever

@@stupidfuckingworm If someone is using a specifically tool so regularly that it dulls like that, they should be smart enough to buy the proper tool for the job. That's just common sense. Too pass the time in the field when I was a Drill Sergeant, I would widdle random pieces of wood I found in the woods of glorious Fort Benning, GA. I damn near lost not one, but two fingers in numerous attempts to carve a spoon. I stayed bloodies & bandaged most of my two years on the trail. I still have a scar, and I proudly display the final spoon I widdled, right next to my hat.

Brilliant idea & great demonstration of how to really make it with readily available rotary tools. Your sharpening technique seems to be very effective, I just made a similar attempt yesterday with my tools, but have yet to get that super sharp edge. (Updated).

Great job. A spoon carving knife in Australia is very expensive so spanner knife here we come!
@BrassLock
@BrassLock 5 жыл бұрын
+@Leo Cashmore: Where I live, we can buy a suitable ring spanner for twenty Baht. That equates to about eighty cents Australian. So I'm sure the spanner won't mind having an exciting life as a treasured spoon carver, placed in an important location next to the chisels. Far better life than covered in grease, bumping around in a rusty toolbox with all the other spanners (including the much despised open-ended spanners), and the mis-used -shifty- shifting spanners.
@BrassLock
@BrassLock 5 жыл бұрын
@Leo Cashmore In the video it does look as if he's taken a really good spanner from his wall rack. But I suspect that by sleight-of-hand he substituted the really good one for an El cheapo one, judging by the streaky marks on the handle. As long as the spanner is a forged chrome-vanadium cheapo, it should be hard enough to make a few spoons. If it were me doing this carver by grinding with a rotary tool, I'd heat it to red heat and let it cool slowly before grinding, then heat treat to harden & temper after finishing. But he said he has no way of heating it to alter it's properties or to forge it.

Brilliant, thank you for sharing this. I love that beautiful old handle you put on it too. I'll start looking for wrenches and handles now. I don't have all the heavy duty workshop tools, but I think it could all be done with a dremel and a vise. I'll just have to buy those. I could see this being a set of 3 in different sizes.

This is quite innovative and nifty. I am a newbie woodcarver. A decent quality scope will easily cost around $60. A very high quality custom made from U.K. with specialized steel etc. runs close to $ 200! Biggest issue with the curved gauge and the scope is sharpening and maintaining the sharp edge. Quality of the hand carved spoon or the bowl dramatically changes when a (razor)sharp tool is used compared to a average sharper tool. The design made by this U tuber is interesting and functional. Will it hold its sharp edge? Congratulations for upscaling and using your imagination. At least you did not bring in the forging.
