Making a Simple Wood Pipe - Easy Woodcarving Project

Using only my knife I make a simple wood pipe from a dead aspen tree. This is an easy wood carving project that's great for anyone to try.
When choosing wood to make a pipe from avoid any woods that are toxic or release toxic fumes when burned. A quick google search will bring up lists of woods that are safe to make a pipe from. For this pipe I used dead, dry trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides). I've made pipes from this wood before and have had no issues with smoking them.
Thank you to everyone who watches. More videos coming soon.

After a certain point, they all sort of start to run together. And they lack that little ping in the back of the head that's like 'Hey, I might be able to do that..' Not a lot of people have bandsaws and drill presses and forty-eight clamps. Most people have some kinda knife laying around

Absolutely. I went on a woodworking course and the tutor was wondering why I was so obsessed with slow, old-fashioned hand tools rather than his fancy machines. I said that, for me, the process is as important as the end result. Using those machines was like running a marathon in a car.
@huiledenoix8014
@huiledenoix8014 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah absolutely. Machines allow for really good work but most of us do not have those machines. Moreover, begginers like me have a weak practical mind. Watching methods with minimal tooling allows me to develop my practical mind, like, how to do things with minimal time and effort. I'm not sure i would yield better results with advanced machinery, one needs skill to efficiently use machines.

Smoking back when I was young, very young, I use to impress my friends when we smoked as I always had a selection of wooden pipes I had made myself. I used a small drill bit from the dump to twist an air hole down the stem, and sanded out the center or burned it. I liked seeing this done with only a knife. I still to this day smoke cannabis out of (much better) hand crafted pipes. Great stuff

i like the way you are not saying anything, not playing any music, nothing, just pure nature sounds and carving sounds, without anything disturbing loud between it because idk what they do sometimes. great video to watch, and actually it is really pretty easy to do such things. i want to do some stuff like that too. create my own stuff from beautiful wood. i want to make my own grinder a long time already, but i never do it. and i want it to be completely out of wood, without any metal parts or something like that. and thats why i never started, because i think i have to use certain tools then, not only a knife.

Love this kind of stuff, tried it out, took around an hour and its a functional and very beautiful pipe. Love how you only used a knife, no hand drills or nothing, this is very traditional here in Finland. Update: The wood shrunk and it came apart, gotta use fully dried wood I suppose.

@@jameskimsey3194 pipe smoking is the oldest form of smoking tobacco. It tastes wonderful, and it's just as complex as wine tasting. Also who smokes cannabis out of a wooden pipe? You'll never be able to clean it and it would ghost so hard you probably would have to keep it in a sealable box

Would the wood not just burn on your first bowl? Is there a way to treat the wood or choose a kind that is less likely to smoulder ??
@NotRelevant1
@NotRelevant1 4 жыл бұрын
Wood doesn’t really burn like that, try holding a lighter up to a piece of wood for a few seconds. The inside of the bowl will char and i suppose with enough use eventually the bowl would kind of fall apart, but it’s not going to combust.
@funonvancouverisland
@funonvancouverisland 4 жыл бұрын
@@NotRelevant1 there is ways of conditioning the inner bowl of a wooden pipe that prevent you from just smoking wood tobacco . Not worried about the pipe igniting more ruining the flavour of the tobacco. A bowl that has a cherry will burn the inner bowl, that is literally how first Nations built canoes. I hear ya though it won't light up like a torch.

Many will take a bit of clay and leave a thin layer which will protect the wood from burning.

This has been an amazing starting point for me. I’ve been making an altered version of this using only a hammer a saw and a shoddy pocket knife and its nearly done. My one question is this. Going forward with future endeavors I would want to use a better knife. Do you have any suggestions as to what to look for in a good knife and what I would need to maintain it?

Thank you for watching! I would recommend checking out Mora knives. They have a wide variety of blade shapes and sizes, so you can pick something suited for the type of work you'll be doing. If you're mostly interested in carving/whittling, I'd recommend the Mora 120. It's a fantastic little carving knife that hold an edge extremely well. I've had mine for many years now and it's still one of my favourite knives to use. As for blade maintenance, a strop with some honing compound will be your primary means of maintaining an edge. You'll only have to resharpen your blade if you get a nick or chip in the edge. For sharpening, waterstones or whetstones will be a good option. Do some searching around and watch some videos on sharpening to find some more information. You can also look up how to sharpen blades with sandpaper (currently the way I sharpen my blades). Sandpaper is a much cheaper option than stones and works just as well. Hope this helps. Happy trails!

@spbeckman
@spbeckman 3 жыл бұрын
I think this pipe isn't for long term use. The heat should cause the wood to warp and eventually leak smoke. It also likely will be very hot to hold. The traditional clay pipes had longer lifetimes, but arent as easy to produce.
@masterpython

If you use it for tobacco and smoke slow while breaking it in the soot builds up into "cake" that protects the wood. It won't last decades like dense hardwood but it should last a while.

The "high" you get off of smoking out of a pipe that you created with your own hands is amazing and just like the "drugs" that you put in them be it tobacco or cannabis, that "high" from your actually using your creation wears off fairly fast, but you keep that feeling in nostalgia each and every time you use your piece. Awesome video!
