High lumber prices putting the brakes on your creative endeavours?
Got too many small parts cluttering up your existence?
Is cardboard becoming a real problem due to all of the crap you buy on Amazon that you don't need?
Well, here's the solution!
You can actually make some pretty sweet stuff from cardboard, like this nifty parts organizer with drawers. You say it won't last, but you, my friend, would be dead wrong - it will last for years, even with regular use. And you can get a lot more fancy than I did here, and be much more selective about the quality of the cardboard you use. It's FREE, after all!
Next: a cardboard table saw!!

I was a corrugated structural design intern for a bit, so I might actually have something to add! - when you crease/fold board, the outside dimension will half the board-thickness longer than your crease, and the inside dimension will be half the thickness narrower. Because of, this, it's very easy to lay out designs perfectly from the start, only measuring during layout, as long as your cuts are accurate (we used CNC) - creases that need to be more accurately placed (like the ones describing the width of the drawers) should be made across the flutes. Creases made with the flutes tend to drift into the nearest flute. - creases should be indented to about half the thickness of the board. The outside liner will be stretched taught and pulled in to that point, and the inside liner will buckle to meet it. - creases should be made on the inside of a curve. Creases that need to be made backward are usually made with a perforation (so you can work from one side only). - to build a pull-tab into the structure, cut an upside-down U-shape into the front outside wall of the drawer, with the "legs" touching the bottom crease line. BUT, don't extend the crease across that shape. When you fold it, it should stick out straight like the one you glued on, but without adding thickness. You can use this to made tabs for closing cereal boxes, and on on the bottom of boxes if you want them to stack into slots on top of other boxes.

I assume the width of the crease must come into play with measurements. Using the back of a butter knife vs an 1/8" thick ruler, for example?
@Kuchenwurst
@Kuchenwurst Жыл бұрын
@@wingnutbert9685 The width of the crease should be negligible if you use a reasonably thin tool. Very wide tools result in more of a radius emerging than a sharp corner.
@wingnutbert9685
@wingnutbert9685 Жыл бұрын
@@Kuchenwurst Agreed. It was just a thought as thickness of the crease would be a factor if looking to get a snug fit for something like these little boxes. And the tool used would have an effect. I know this from experience, but I often pose these questions to prompt those that don't to take details like this into account as they are often not considered or mentioned. :)

Cardboard is a highly underrated building material. All the drawer liners in my toolboxes are old cardboard boxes and old iPhone boxes are very sturdy and good for holding screws and other small parts.

I LOVE using cell phone/electronic boxes for storing things in drawers. They are very sturdy and durable and a great size for it. Lucky for me, my son works at a cell phone store...he keeps all the boxes people don't want! 😄

I'm a cardboard artist, and I'm glad to see others dabbling in card board. I use a pizza cutter to score my cardboard. If you use a length of for the handle all the way back. Apply a light layer of glue to both pieces of cardboard. this will prevent warping.

Add a finish! That would add more strength. Shellac or water based polyurethane. (don't forget to sand between coats! lol) Up next week, John makes a mini table saw for cutting cardboard from a pizza cutting wheel!

This is so great! Packing cardboard is a fantastic medium to use for projects like this, it's highly underrated and yet readily available to everyone. Not everyone has access to endless supply's of plywood and timber, a work shop and not everyone can afford all the tools needed to make wooden projects. Making things out of cardboard is also a great way to model a project before making it out of wood. Projects like this encourage people to step into the maker/builder community. Great video mate 👍

You showed up as a KZfaq recommendation & as a paper crafter I love finding ways to recycle really good quality cardboard and your drawers are a little masterpiece .now if only I could actually cut straight I’d have this nailed or should that be glued I no time all,instead of multiple pieces that get cast side white I redo it. Thankfully it’s not costing me anything except time & my patience .

When working with cardboard, don't be hesitant to use lots of packing tape throughout the construction. Cardboard can also be painted to transform it into a durable product. I would love to build several of these to hold not only small parts, but seeds for planting, spices in the kitchen and sewing stuff but I would still make the outer case and shelves using wood for strength and durability while the drawers could be made using cardboard.

Nice thought and change of pace video.. Ha..Ha.. We are all doing the same thing (Welders, Carpenters, etc).. Just using different tools and Mediums.. Might as well do some with alternative materials. You never know when we might need to do it for necessity, the way this carp is all heading.. Ha... The Best dishes are made from Leftovers, and the Best Chefs can make a great dinner with Whatever is in the Fridge. Basically the same thing you just did. Grabbed some boxes and kept doing what you do.. Creative for sure.. Thanks for the time you spend making videos...
