@@maggiewright1781 Hi Maggie, it's deep (enough!) in the middle for toads and frogs tend to use shallow water for breeding, but there would be newts, dragonflies, damselflies and of course all the creatures that need insects or any mosquito larvae, such as larger insects, birds, amphibians and bats - they certainly take care of any likely mosquitoes :) Best wishes, Joel

Buy cheap land on a swamp, and dig a big gouge out of the middle, bottom-most part of your land. It will drain a lot of the swampy area into a pond-like area instead. Or wait until one of the trees in the swamp falls over, and it should look like a natural pond. Just dig it out more and you'll have a pond next to a fallen over tree's root ball. Likely already shaded because it is in a swamp with tall trees.

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton yep definitely: I decided to take more of an interest in my garden so watched all the episodes of Garden Rescue for ideas, eventually swayed by your other channel, The Butterfly Brothers, to go for wild-life. I let my grass and the weeds grow last year and was amazed by how much better it looked without me doing a thing. Next step is to experiment with multiple single seating areas connected by a small path, water placed somewhere, and adding my own plants in those areas where the weeds thrived. The fun part, which I didn't realize to start with, is that I get to experiment with the garden every year.

Hello to you in Japan! I really appreciate your comment, thank you - especially from the country that knows how to do beautiful ponds! Although these ponds are not good for Koi they are good for wildlife, insects, bats, birds, amphibians - we are having to look after our nature here, we have lost so much and it is important that we make spaces for it here :) Best wishes to you and yours - I subscribed to your channel, so relaxing and beautiful fish of course :) Joel

There was a pond already in the garden of my new house when I moved in, a big shaped glass-fibre one, which was really lucky. It was just overgrown and full of algae and plonked in the middle of the lawn though. I moved it this week, digging a decent hole in a nice spot, cleaned it... and bought two coldwater fish for it. I'm addicted now and about to buy some nice plants to grow around it!

Quick Question -- what do you do to prevent mosquitos? Would adding a small pump to keep the water moving help?
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Eleanor - thank you. The bats, birds, amphibians and larger insects (like dragonflies etc) will all feast on mosquitoes and their larvae. Also, re adding a pump, the native oxygenating plants, the floating leaved plants and low-nutrient subsoil used all keep the water aerated and clear :) There is a 3 part series on the channel showing in real-time how I made this pond and why the methods are used. Additionally, you might find this video helpful, it shows just a few of the many ponds created in this way, after they establish in a few weeks: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/oK1hqpp-us7MiKc.html Hope this helps Eleanor, best wishes - Joel

I got so exited about building one: watched all possible youtube films, articles on internet, bought your book! The problem that I have is the space in my small garden. The possible place for a pond is close to a young rowan tree. I don't mind taking care of falling leaves in the fall, but I'm not so sure about the roots damaging the liner? I would be grateful for your advise 😊💚 your work and dedication is trully inspiring! Thank you for being who you are! Warm regards from Netherland

What a wonderful comment to read after a very hard week! :) Thank you so much for your kind words and support, it means a lot. I am not sure if you have seen already on the channel but there is a 3 part series of how to make this pond - if you click on "videos" section of the channel you'll see everything there. Rowan is one of my two favourite trees, so if you can leave it that is good, and as you say it won't take much in the autumn to stay on top of the leaf litter. The roots won't make an impact if you use the fleece under the liner and above, and then you have the subsoil too of course, you could always use two layers of fleece underneath to ensure extra protection but I am sure it will be fine. If it was just usual pond liner and no protective fleece and subsoil then you might have a problem. I do hope that's helpful and that you enjoy the rest of the channel - your garden sounds wonderful, whatever the size may be - best wishes to you and yours in the Netherlands - best wishes, Joel

Hello Joel, do you ever have a problem with water wicking? I've built my pond using your technique with the underlay over the buytl liner. The pond loses gallons of water a day. The underlay came up to the edge of the pond, I now think I should have tucked it down leaving 2" to 3" of buytl around the edge to prevent water wicking away into the surrounding soil through the underlay.

I know the feeling well! This is one of very few dug by hand, but the client's garden had steep steps to the rear and a wheelbarrow was useless too, hence the bucket loads of soil! Best wishes, Joel

Hello brother, quite impressively done! I think it would been much better if the pond liner (black sheet) was spread well beyond the water boundaries of the pond. It would keep the water from seeping down the sheet & then pushing it up. Love & greetings from India. Very well done.❤🇮🇳

Hi Steve - the 3 part instructional videos are on the channel which give more detail than this timelapse - I am desperate to get back to this client's property to see how this has fared for myself - I have good reports of visitors etc and the plants have established well - just need to find time to get back there! Best wishes, Joel

What is low nutrient soil, why not use ordinary soil ? Thanks. Great video by the way. I'm on my way to doing this I've used old carpet for under lining, and await my liner. I like how you filled in with soil. Could one soil the liner without the underlay on top I wonder. ? 😁👍
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton 3 жыл бұрын
Hi. The low nutrient soil helps keep the water clear. Old carpet is perfect for underlay too 👍 The filling with soil helps create a great medium for planting into. You don’t have to use a layer of fleece / underlay on top of the liner, but it just protects from any sharp stones in the soil of course 😊👍

Great vid Joel... Just would like to ask you would yorkstone be OK for creating the dry wall effect in side pond deep area.. What's your preferred rock choice
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton
@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Жыл бұрын
Hi there Paul, that's absolutely fine and would be a stone of my choice, often used on client ponds. I am not sure if you have seen already but there is a 3 part series on the channel on how I made this pond, and why I use these methods - if you go to the channel and then "videos" you will see them there, it will be a lot more helpful than this timelapse :) If you're in the UK and need any advice or materials then we sell them at www.wildyourgarden.com, it's everything I use on my own jobs and we're happy to give advice too :) Best wishes - Joel

We line our ponds with a special mixture of tar and metal to prevent any leakage. Holds water pretty well. We can't grow any fish since cars go over it all the time.

Hi Thank u for this great channel as I started to turn my garden to benefit the local wildlife. I did dig a large pond last August 2019 but before I can lay it with a pond Liner the Autumn rain started and as u know it hardly stopped all through autumn and winter and as my garden soil is Clay the pond was absolutely filled with about 3 feet of rain water. In February the pond was full of mating frogs and within the next 2 weeks the pond was full of eggs and right now full of tadpoles. Now my question if u can help me out I he grateful is: as the pond had no water loss (except through evaporation because of the heatwave we've had all through May) do I still need to place pond Liner or can I just leave it as clay based pond ? As I'm new to all this gardening and wildlife I dont want to disturb frogs; toads and Newts (I've seen small ones about the pond plants) that might have made their home? Should I drain the pond after all the tadpoles leave the pond; please help as I'm in a dilemma now specially as it started to rain again for the past few days and the pond water level gone up again . Cheers

Hi Reza. Thanks for getting in touch I’m pleased you are enjoying the channel 😊 As for your pond, if it managed to hold water over the last couple of months, chances are it may well survive the summer with no liner. In the wild, some great ponds are ones that actually dry out in the summer months, after most amphibians have finished their life cycle. Newts and frogs in particular often leave ponds later in the year to hunt defied they hibernate. In essence, I’d wait and see what July / August brings, as you can always line the pond in the autumn. Hope that helps 😊

@@WildYourGardenWithJoelAshton Thank u for ur reply. Can u plz explain why do we actually need pond liner for? If my pond seem to be good at keeping hold of rain water; can I just leave it natural clay based specially as I've noticed bees have made holes in the clay and they are constantly in/out if the holes. Cheers
