I’m making a really beautiful walnut decorative tray with maple splines. The tray has a subtle profile along the along the bottom to the feet. This is the style of woodworking project I really like making. It has some character but isn’t over the top. The maple splines are the perfect touch of contrast. If you are looking to dive into some fun woodworking projects then give this one a shot.

Great little tray - just enough design elements to keep it interesting but not too hard to make.

Beautiful. Finally, somebody cutting triangular splines 😁 Most of the time I see people just cut some odd rectangles and then half of it is just wasted as cutoffs 🤦

I’m in my first year of woodworking, aside from the occasional project around the house. I really like making boxes. I love your content. Lots of inspiration.

You pretty much nailed the L x W for the most aesthetic look. You said 12 x 7? I use a rounded off Fibonacci number, 1.618, to determine L x W for boxes and rectangular objects. 12" divided by 1.618 equal 7.42". I then round these numbers up or down 1/4"-1/2" (doesn't matter that much) to get what's most visually appealing to me. My height is determined by what I think looks best for my boxes. Excellent work! Love your videos.

I often like to use a semi dark wood for splines with walnut for a more subtle contrast.

Really nice, Billy. Simple too. At the end I was thinking that something like a 15 degree slope on the top edges would look good. Bill

Hello, love your stuff. I heard something a few times on the cuts with the miter saw and thought I would say something. It almost sounded like the blade is not parallel with the miter slot. Just something to check. Keep up the good work

Why don't you use the same wood of the box for the splines? It seems that everyone does what you did, is that a trend? I think that black would be a good color.

@@NewtonMakes that'll be great video look forward to that. One thing a would suggest although am no professional or creator is try keep it so it's achievable seen few other creators do q&as that are about setting up what to buy etc etc but even though it's for beginners 8/10 times it's still not achievable. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍

Did you leave gaps for wood expansion on the bottom or does it not matter on something this small?
@NewtonMakes
@NewtonMakes Жыл бұрын
I leave a 1/16 - 1/8" gap for something this size.

Am I correct that you tape the corners before cutting the slots for the keys to avoid tear out? I'm in awe of your miters, do you find changing your gauge to 45 vs tilting the blade to be just as accurate? Thanks for your videos, I really enjoy them!
@NewtonMakes
@NewtonMakes Жыл бұрын
Good eye. Yes, the tape helps with tearout. I don't tend to have an issue changing the miter gauge I'm using.

What is the brand of double sided tape you use? I cannot get anything that beats the blue tape CA glue combo...but I want to try to save myself some steps.

Can't remember the brand but it's "turners tape" so that may help with your search.

Maybe, but in the world of MakerTube, they're always referred to as splines.
@tungsten_carbide

@@rolandrivard2667 Not _entirely_ true but it does seem that way 😥Regardless, the point is that everyone calling 'em that is using the wrong word, and of course not doing any learners a service as a result. This inevitably confuses people when they see older sources (including most or possibly all of the cornerstone joint books written in English), or view non-American content where keys might still be named correctly. It's interesting to investigate the spread of the wrong usage by doing a search on YT. Tracking back it seems about 7 or 8 years ago was when calling these splines started to take hold and it has only spread since then.
