In the battle of Stainless Steel Man Sai vs Steve, Steve triumphs. Finally.

The ancient Chinese/Japanese san mai technique is demonstrated here with the use of a stainless steel jacket applied to a hardened, high carbon steel core. Breaking my number one rule to carefully check a dry fit before gluing leads to minor heart ache but overall this project is a win. Want to discuss a custom knife for you? steve@greenbeetlegear.com - fair warning: custom, hand made, one-off knives start at $200.

Hey GB just wanted to say thank you again for your wisdom with using horse stall mat. It has completely changed how I do finishing work and made my knives way more satisfactory.

If you like horse stall mat, just wait till you get into looking into the fact that similar "rubbery" products are available in a wide range of durometer values (basically, how mushy or hard it is). Industry has developed those different materials for different applications ranging from conveyor belts to gaskets, and their research can help you find the right specific material for handles, mats to stand on, backers for polishing... all sorts of cool stuff.

I think it's an endemic trait of all makers: you're so aware of what it takes to create something that all the flaws, no matter how minute, seem glaring. Really, that is a beautiful knife. Whatever imperfections there might be are minimal and probably only noticeable by its creator. If you hadn't drawn our attention to them I doubt any of us would have said anything but, "wow!" Nice work, sir.

You make some of the absolutely most beautiful knives I have ever seen, thanks for letting us follow along. A tip I have found working on guns near grinders and such is wrap the parts that can't be touched by a grinder or sandpaper is first a layer of electrical tape, then a few pieces of leather get taped on over the electrical tape and if, for some reason, you do accidentally bump against a sharp corner or maybe clip the girder as you walk away, the polished parts stay safe.

My dad gave me a book for Christmas. " the fifty dollar knife shop " in it the knife maker used a blade protection made of leather and wood. He had a steal ring with wedges to lock the protector around the blade. I made my dad a Bowie knife with the stock removal method from blade steal. Thank for sharing.

Congrats on the blade. Its heart breaking to have the blade split on you during quench when you put all the hammering effort into it. Took me 3 tries to get one that finally didn't split, and its a great feeling. Beautiful knife, I might have to weld up another billet and have another go at it again. Thanks for the video.

Nicely done! I had a feeling when you asked if we wondered how the vid would last almost 20 minutes that the core was gonna Spain down the center in the quench! Yikes that sucks, but I'm glad you were able to get the other half of the billet made into a good lookin knife 🙂 One tip that I know a number of bladesmiths that make SS san mai use to avoid the core splitting, is to clay up the spine and ricasso really well as if you were clay hardening for a hamon, as this will insulate those areas so the expansion that happens to the carbon steel core in the quench won't affect those areas with such thick cross sections as badly. I forget the exact terms used for what exactly causes this to happen (I'll have to look it up again to refresh my memory) but it really stuck with me after seeing this problem happen to guys on the forums over the years as well as threads talking about forging SS san mai in general. I'll search and post the link here to the thread I learned about this in.

Very nice knife! I recently used dyed stabilized maple burl slabs on a knife for the first time. While I was trying to cut out one of the slabs, it broke in two between two small knots. I sanded down an extra piece and collected the dust. I mixed that with epoxy and stuck the two pieces back together overnight. The knife is finished now and it is really hard to tell which slab cracked.
@Mistraker
@Mistraker 7 жыл бұрын
I collect some sawdust from each handle I work, and then if any voids appear, I take some of the sawdust, pack it into the void, and fill with CA glue. I sand flush, and if there's still a void, I fill, glue, and sand again, and keep going till it's entirely filled and smooth. The sawdust matches the overall tone of the wood in question, and in the end, you'd never know it had been filled. That's a good looking knife, by the way. It took a lot of skill and patience.
