@@skullLOVERGamez very well, but I must confess I didnt get to use it remotely as much as I wanted to...it is curently stored in a dry box and preserved from heat or cold. Then again the legos tecnics ball and sockets joints that me and my brother used as kids are still in a good shape and they did sustain quite a bit of abuse back then.

I've wanted to make a stop motion animation for so long but I didn't know how to make it movable, I had lots of problems with the skeleton and the materials I would put on top but now I think I have a better idea of what to do! Thank you! My doll will be named Mayuki 😊

Very cool. For those just getting started, I found that using 3-inch skeletons as a base helped me with getting proportions right. There are a plethora of action figure weapons that fit with them and inuse aluminum foil to build them up so that if a wire breaks, there is still some poseability to the puppet. I hope to be able to get this detailed one day.

Very inspiring. I've been animating miniature poseable skeletons lately and they are almost impossible to work with for a variety of reasons. Your video has got me thinking about the possibility of making my own characters. Thanks! It's also good to see how much trial and error you had to go through; I don't feel like such a dunce now, given all me tries and retries!

Yeah I'm no expert, I wanted to show the process. During experimentation shit happens you gotta adapt, figuring out is part of the fun imo...even if avoiding the main errors is a good thing can prevent real frustration, a little tutorial always comes handy😁. Thanks for your feedback, Cheers!

That's cool! Thank you for showing the whole process, mistakes and all, that is very helpful :) About making clothing - I saw a good method to make doll clothes. You wrap a doll in some plastic wrap and then put paper tape (like a masking tape) on it. Then you design shape of your clothes on top of the tape and carefully cut and remove tape from the doll. It gives you very accurate template. Hope it's usefull :D

Thanks for the tip! actually knew about the technique applied for actual tailored clothing but for some reason never thought of using it in puppet making lol (than again I am novice in puppetmaking ). That is so cool! Years ago I made a puppet to use to make a children’s book I used the aluminum wire and a foam sculpting medium for the body. I remember making shoes from leather and got my mother to sew the dress. I had issues with flexibility. I only had to do a dozen position. I love the LEGO idea. It is brilliant! I wish I thought of that back then.

Glad you liked, I only thought about the lego because I couldn't really afford the actual articulted metal armature, and aluminium broke... Had to find a cheap but worthy alternative ;)

Have you've ever watch the very, very end of Paranormal movie??? Like maybe the last 20 seconds. It shows in stop animation how the main character Norman was made from being to him walking away in claymation. You will most likely have to go frame by frame to see the whole process, but it is so amazing how he was made.

k&s brand tubing is great for square tubing. They make telecoping sizes that fit into each other. It's expensive but we don't need much for it.

Thank you for sharing your experiments, I learned a lot from them. What I have learn about wires is that even aluminium wire can break easily if you don't chose the right one. It as to be as pure as possible, meaning no treatment of any kind. So hardware store aluminium wire is not the ideal one. You have to purchase them somewhere or on some website that is clearly marked "aluminium stop motion wire". Also, Edu Puertas made some tests about twisting wires and it turns out that the wires that lasted the longest are the wires that was twisted a maximum of 5 times.

Not sure how it is you dont have many more subscribers, your work is very incredible. I hear people ask all the time how to make things with cheap or free materials and you do this in spades. I don't know if you watch Bard's Craft and Franky D Crafter but they both have very unique channels using simple easy yo get material that I think you'd enjoy. Hey Chris, thanks for your longtime support. I haven't been very productive uploading content on the channel lately so it defenelty doesn't help the channel grow. But the slow growth its probably because I disabled the ads on the vids when I made the channel (my content is free and I wanted the tutorials to be accessible without ads hindering the viewer experience ;) ), but it turns out the KZfaq algorithm doesn't reference the content very well when you don't enable ads...I've just very recently enabled them maybe it'll boost the visibility a little bit... I'm gonna check the channels you shared! Cheers!

What you could have done is instead of letting the clay dry, you could have made a very neutral looking face but you would have sculpted different parts of that's still wet clay animated More expressive that way. You would have still have the same shape of the head but you would have different expressions to go along with it.

yeah i'm defenelty going to redo the head with a more neutral expression and find a way to make the mouths. The idea of the wet clay is interesting but would take too trouble and much time to animate for what im looking for, however i'm gonna experiment this non drying clay for muscles and other softer parts, under a latex skin for future puppets. hopefully it'll give a more natural bend for muscles/exposed limbs/extruding bodyfat.

Nice build! However keep in mind lick flickers are the enemy of the stop motion-er, be sure to use good quality DC powered lights and dont move your lamps while animating your Stop motion quality will greatly improve! i used to make stop motion with actual lego figures but i've never thought of using ball joints, maybe Bionicle ball joints could work too? (They are much bigger so they might make for some bigger armatures but as far as i remember they cant hold that much weight, maybe some modifications could make it work?)

Hey thanks for your advices ! Rest assured I intend to shoot with a better setup i just used a free app on the holiday vacations to test. This is why i wasn't too concerned by the poor light and the lack of fluidity un mouvement, hindered by very limited onion skin feature of the app. I now have a Real soft for animating and intend to shoot on Green/blue screen under controled lights.

Concering bionicles I did consider it when looking for the parts, but the pieces were way too bulky for the thin articulations I wanted for this character. However for a larger puppet it could work, with a few tweaks... if you ever try tell me what you thought about it! Cheers!

@@LandvaettrsLair You did a great job.! I see your comments and if I may make a suggestion....watch your camera settings. You can do away with the lights flickering with camera settings. Again you are doing an awesome job.! I can't wait to see your next one. EDIT:. I just subscribed to your channel so I don't miss it. For their puppets Aardman studio animators usually use an articulated metallic skeleton topped with a non-drying modeling clay called Plastilina. You can usually find several hardness of Plastilina to suit your purpose.

Those are very very different styles. Paranorman uses a lot of 3D printed and hand painted props and mechanical armatures. Shaun the sheep uses a lot of hand sculpted colored clay and wire armatures. Shaun the sheep is a more realistic place for a beginner to start I would say.

great video. you're very talented. I think the lego armature idea is way out of my league on a technical level...but I'm going to give it a go. I have just started getting into this hobby, but it's kind of amazing that so many people on KZfaq talk about wire armatures instead of building with individual lego pieces like you did. Did you buy those individually?

Yeah i ordered the parts i needed on a site called "brick and go" but you can find various other furnishers. Wire armature is a good option to go faster provided the wires are numerous enough and joints long enough to sustain bending ( best for bigger puppets) but if your scale is a little bigger you Can also consider bionicles, you shouldnt have to fiddle as much with separte parts....

Very good idea with the lego joints. Use gloves with that Epoxy putty, it's nasty stuff!

Nice experiments. I think that the name of the knife is Pukko, it is the name in Finland. If you don't want to have problems with your airbrush, always think to filter the paint before usind, though a stocking for instance or through a tea (I don't know the name in English)and it will be the very end to thoses problems.

Thanks for your feedback and advices! I've never seen any miniature airbrusher out there using a filter for miniature paint though, I do add a bit of medium thinner but miniature paint is supposed to be thin pigmentation already...

filtering all paints is a real solution: most of acrylic or synthetic paints are small bits of pigments floating in something, and after a while they agglomerate and find very funny to spend some time in your airbrush nozzle and stop paint to go through.If you filter your paint just before using it you will stop their nasty little game and show who rules the act of painting, trust me, I spend nearly 40 years airbrushing.

Liked your video a lot! I have a few questions though: I saw you were experimenting with Modibot, how was your experience with that? Did you know you can buy just the ball joints from them (they have a pack of ball joints in their product section) and that way, save a little pain while putting the armature together. Additionally for more sturdiness, you could have used metal balls and rods, and make the joints yourself. Working with latex is not practical at all, why didn't you cast the body on a soft silicone rubber like Smooth'on s' Dragon Skin. This would have helped a lot in your character, because the result is pretty much like human skin, so soft and malleable. Thanks for the video.

Thanks for your feedback, glad you liked the vid! The modibot is great just not large enough for the character I wanted to build and I found the articulations a bit too thick, but i'm defenetly gonna use him to make another pupper of some tiny forest folk. The modibot was actually a gift from my gf when she saw I was having a hard time with my wires haha...I don't remember if I looked at the separate parts but I think I discarded the option because of the articulations width...I'll check it out again for larger puppet tho so thanks for the reminder. I know you can user silicone but in most tutorials I saw the animators used latex so I went with that. Also this was my first attempt and I just didn't wanna cast just yet, I still wasn't too confident with the armature and figured I would handle breakage/replacement better with a puppet mainly constituted of wrapings! I'll defernetly experiment with casting at somepoint! Cheers !

hi, I'm sure someone has already asked this but what did you slide over the nails to make them thicker? I've been trying to find something that looks similar to what was shown in the video . Also this is amazing and one of the most helpful process video that I've found all day, awesome work!

Hi! I'd love to. I actually have quite a few "modular" puppets in mind that I want to create, serveral morphologies that could be used for various characters, but for now I spent time making tabletop terrain for RPG, at least when I get the time to do so. But I'm eager to get back to stopmotion. Thanks for your feedback!

Hi Rossella! Hands are tricky. The "fastest" and easiest way I know is using several thin and souple wires (think aluminium or copper) twisted together at the wrist and separating at the palm. (Either twist them manually or Maybe you Can come up upon electric wires that are already made of smaller intertwined wires inside the insulation shaft.) I advice you to seal the wires inside the palm of the hand (i used époxy, other hardening pastes could do the trick provided they are reliable). I than rolled some thread around the fingers to bulk them up before I added the latex. In any case I suggest you do a bunch of spares because because the thin wirering make them notoriously fragile. @@rossellacreti5132 the brand is "Esprit composite" it's french, I bought it in an art store supplier were I live, but I'm sure you can find other similar product were you live in an art supply store or online. Just make sure It's air drying and meant for blanket moulds/masks/puppets making.
