How can animation convey complex, intangible concepts? A visual metaphor, or an idea represented through imagery, can take an idea as massive as Big Data and tie it to the familiar depiction of a growing tree. TED-Ed animators explain how to make an abstract idea come alive visually.

A cool way to approach talks. I love doing things like this with my background in animation :)

Just what I needed to help develop this story I'm creating. I cab often create various characters in random situations but thinking of ideas for the world in which they exist slips me at times

I thought the comparison between having or not having visuals and images was pretty fascinating. Nice video!

I think the way the example was worded (excerpt about island networks) was easier to understand before the graphical illustration. At least, that's not the imagery I had in mind when I read it. Part of the challenge of conveying complex ideas is putting them in imagery the listener can relate to.

Honestly this process is harder than you think; I get asked to visually represent abstract concepts and Bible verses at my church and paint something that related to them, but every time it's still hard to do. This affirms me that it is a process that takes time, a skill you can hone, and that it is a skillset and not something you're typically instantly good at. Thanks for this video, it's been really helpful in showing me another way to start analyzing from a script and picking a design style that matches.

I think the tree analogy for big data is very misleading. The amount of data we are collecting grows exponentially and very rapidly. This is not well-explained with the growth of a single tree and its leaves. The key questions for these visualizations is: do they they help the audience understand something easier? Or: do they help people remember the key concepts? However, the way you explain it it is more some visual thing to make the video look cool and artistic.

krita is a nice software..nice because it is completely free. you get different types of brushes too. krita is mainly for frame by frame animation..better have a pen tab by your side

***** This word isn't rude, it's actually proper translation from "Blah blah". Rude word "Бля" differs only in one letter from "Бла". I've wrote this in comment section just to show, that some Russians enjoy this videos. And since google+ shows comments of your native language first, I could found some interesting people from my country.

This lesson is really weak. All the design choices were pretty much unjustified, except for catching the attention of viewers... as opposed to actually being effective in communicating complex ideas.

well thats what the point it.. designs are made to catch attention..once the attention is caught the viewer feels like sitting through the video to see what it is about
