There is a strange phenomenon- crafting supplies are never just crafting supplies. In your videos they're all reminiscent of food, here I guess they're all dinosaur park pieces for some reason?

It's a really pretty build. I have a few tips for you. For the shingles you can use one of those scarpbooking scissors which blades are shaped. There are curvy ones, pointy ones, ... SO much faster than doing it with normal ones. For the tower's roof, if you don't cut completly through the cardboard, only scratch it, you can fold it. It keeps shape and you don't need to glue each pannel. It needs a litlle geometry thinking and maths but it's worth it. If you cut out a triangle and use it as a pattern for all the sides, you draw them sides touching, scratch the cardboard, fold, bam you got a roof with almost no glue. Sorry, english isn't my first language. I hope it's clear enough.

@MechanicalFiend
@MechanicalFiend 11 ай бұрын
Your English is fantastic, don't worry about it! The issue I have with using scrapbooking scissors is that I build at a bunch of different scales and every roof is a different pattern... so I'd have to get new scissors for every build, which seems impractical to me. Totally agree on the roof part- scoring is super useful, I've just found it doesn't work well with paperboard. It's great with something like cardstock, but if you do it with paperboard the shapes aren't very sharp and distort a bit. Appreciate the tips a ton though, thank you so much 💜

@@MechanicalFiend Some of the stuff was so wild! Crazy, weird, old toys, beautifully hand carved designs in furniture pieces, gaudy upholstery. There was definitely a large spectrum of items. Fortunately/unfortunately I was in high school at the time so both being able to afford such items and have room for them wasn't really a possibility. I did get to keep a few of the paintings though.

My wife loved the Queen Anne style Victorian houses, until I reminded her of all the stairs. Since she was visually impaired, stairs were always scary to her. I, on the other hand, love to look at them, would even love to walk around in one, get the floor plans... I love floor plans, makes writing easier if you have an idea of what the house you are looking at looks like. Anyway, my dream home would be round or crescent shaped and at least partly underground. I love the idea. It would be south to southeasterly oriented so you get winter and morning sun. Of course, at less than 3 months from 70 and owning my own home, I do mean own, it is paid off, I don't foresee this happening.

I do think there are some little cottage-type one story Victorian(ish?) style homes as well! But totally, just visiting these types of homes is fantastic. That sounds like a lovely dream home! The orientation of a house is so important, love having all sorts of natural light in spaces. That said, the fact that you own your home is wonderful, regardless if it's exactly that picture of a dream house or not~

Id love a gothic hobbit house someday, I like above ground homes, but the efficiency of a hobbit hole is too much to not take imo. Deep coloured wood floors, with wainscotting a third of the way up the walls, and the other 2 being a charcoal black colour with red accents, and wood beam arches every 5 feet for support. Red round stained glass windows like a gothic church, the window in the living room having a padded spot to lay and read, the one in the kitchen opening up to pass through to an outdoor seating area, a big pantry with lots of space for canning and drying and storing food. A little natural pond fed with rain running off the roof for the ducks to swim in, the most autumnal pumpkin patch there ever was, a pretty little garden shed, some big oak trees, dry stone walls with ivy growing over it, a wrought iron gate, cobblestone paths with flower bushes along it, and path leading up to a spot for picnics on the grass roof. maybe a tower in the back as well, cause theyre so pretty, and have good views, a writing room in the spire roof would be the most amazing thing ever.

Here's an idea for a less mind-numbing version of shingles. 😂 Get a hole punch and punch out a bunch of holes. Overlap them, but with the top row cut them in half so that they all look like half-circles.

May be less mind-numbing, but will certainly be more hand-numbing haha! I've had to hole punch a lot of pieces in the past and it's really rough on my wrists because of the impact. Surprisingly cutting the strips is slightly less so!

Soo cute!! I definitely relate to doing things in the wrong order, and making more work for myself! In 2011-16, I lived in my car in Hawaii, and then rented rooms from people. I started building little houses & buildings, because that was all I had space for. Then in 2017, I inherited a beautiful house from my mother. I never thought I would have a house of my own like that!! So, keep dreaming! ❤

Yes! I know there are pinking shears and other patterned scissors, the problem with them is mainly that they are often not the right scale since I build at all different sizes. How is the hand feeling? You did a great job on the interior of your new place and on the mini-dream house too. Since I now know those are the style you like, have you ever had a chance to tour houses from that period? I ask as I grew up in Memphis, TN, and there are several period houses that aren't just still standing and taken care of, but since they are also part of the museum system, you can tour them and see what the furniture looked like and how the decorations were. It wouldn't be the whole dream, but it would give you a tangible part of it. I hope you have a wonder filled weekend, Madam Fiend!

As always, it's all the tiny details that bring your projects to life. Hot glue flower pots...nifty. If you want to try a different method for making the scalloped shingles, use your hole punch to make a boatload of confetti, then glue the disks to strips. Overlap the strips at half the height of the disks, shifted over half a disk, and voila! I think. I haven't done it but it works in my head. (Or you could glue all the disks to a sheet so you don't risk any gaps in coverage.)
@MechanicalFiend

To be honest I've actually made other things where I punched out a bunch of pieces with the hole punch and it was a lot harder on my hands than cutting the strips. The impact really goes to the wrists when you use the hole punch. Would probably work well if it was easier on the hands though!

Tip for the roofs of the towers, but maybe you thought about it yourself already, just make one piece. So actually what you did now, but then al the rectangles connected and at the end you can make a little piece to glue the two ends together to get that octagon shape.
@MechanicalFiend
@MechanicalFiend 11 ай бұрын
Totally that would make it a lot easier, but I do usually work with paperboard for the base structure because it's a bit thicker and stronger... which also means that it doesn't fold and form into shapes as well as one piece. To get the crisp edges you kinda have to cut it, but that would work great for something like cardstock!

The Neverending Story😂 So. True! So glad to see another video. You keep doing you✌️🖖 Edit- Just wanna throw out there that egg cartons (the paper kind, not styrofoam) are great for texture! I found the video you're talking about and that does look super cool! I'll keep that in mind for next time, what a great texture for stones!
