Hello everyone and welcome to a new video!
This is the second project in my efforts to make a more vintage-inspired-history-bounding wardrobe (I need to find a smaller name for this). I follow quite a few vintage wearers and dressers on Instagram and KZfaq, and I have always felt really inspired by these looks (like Rachel Maksy and Shirinatra). I felt like a staple brown skirt would be great for my wardrobe. However, I could never find anything similar to what I wanted in my price range and size online or in vintage and second hand stores.
So I decided to make one! This is a really simple, easy skirt to make. It's a circle skirt with a centre front closure of buttons. I mentioned in my video that I think this style would work best with a less full skirt, as the weight of the button placket closure makes it hang strangely sometimes (but it twirls well sooooo you win some, you lose some?). It is really comfy and goes with everything so I'm actually really happy with it! I would just recommend being wary of the warping of the fabric, because some of it is cut on the bias, it can actually keep stretching while you sew, so I would check the length a few times during the sewing process (something I should have done!).
As mentioned in the video, I don't go over how to draft a circle skirt. There a lot of tutorials out there for this, but here is the one that taught me how to do it, by Angela Clayton:
• How to Make a Circle S...
And also a cool resource is this circle skirt calculator:

I believe the uneven hem is a common issue with circle skirts since some of the fabric is hanging straight on-grain and some is hanging on a bias. If you hang the skirt up (on a mannequin or even just from the waistband) and let it sit for a couple days the weight of the fabric will pull down in some places (and not in others) as far as it's going to do. Then you go back after to re-measure and hem. It does mean that you don't get to cut, sew and wear all in the same day but you'll have that particular problem sorted out without too much cursing.
@CatsCostumery

yep, absolutely! I mention in the video that usually I let circle skirts hang at least over night, and then trim the hem according to the pattern. I believe this one continued to stretch as I worked on it due to the weave of the fabric :)

I'm so glad I read this. I'm going to be making a historic dress that suggests hanging the garment for 24 hours over several different steps. I was going to skips this, but after reading your post, I'll be following the advise.

It’s been 35 + years since I mad a full circle skirt. Light brown wool blend, zipper, regular interfacing in the waistband (I never like fusible), slightly below the knee length. I used a lace tape on the hem, hand stitched. Loved that skirt. Same wool blend in a deep black, I did a full button down pencil skirt with pockets. Loved that skirt two. I had a very eclectic wardrobe in my 20s.

It still turned out beautifully! I love the swishyness of the skirt! I also recently made a vintage inspired circle skirt, but with only 3/4 circle and inserted pockets. My fabric was only 90 cm wide and I wanted it to be ankle-length, so I had to cut the panels as quarter-circles, with two sideseams and a back seam.
@alexoost
@alexoost 3 жыл бұрын
I generally prefer to make my skirts with one back seam for closing and two side seams for internal pockets. I suppose it depends on what you prefer for your design.

Buttonholes are sooooo stressful! I always test several times to make sure my machine is not going to be feisty. Oh and I have found that going over the buttonhole twice really makes a difference finish-wise. It just looks so much cleaner to me.

This colour became my favourite this past season 💕 it was so nice to see you handling this fabric ✨☺️ Regarding the uneven hem: all the circle skirts I’ve ever sewn in my life, I’ve always had to put on a mannequin an re-measure the hemline. I just use a large ruler that I put on the ground and measure up to the shortest part of the skirt - usually wherever the seams are - and then measure the same height from the ground to the hem all around the skirt, and mark it with chalk. Then just trim the excess and finish the hem. I don’t know if this is HA or common practice, but it works wonders for me ☺️

Your way to hem skirt is the way my mother use to do on my skirt when I was kid, it is more précise du to warping of matérial and also adapting to bodychape. She had a tool that is just a ruler on a feet with an ajustable guide to help place the needle on the same level all around
@CatsCostumery
@CatsCostumery 4 жыл бұрын
yes that sounds like a great method! I can't believe I didn't even think to remeasure it after the first check, as it obviously warped further on - I've definitely learned my lesson :)

Best way to do full hems is to run a basting thread before turning up, you can then gather the fullness as you turn the hem. A hint from mum, learned in the days when full skirts were the fashion and most people sewed their own. It really does help. Beautiful skirt, mine will be in navy linen and a half circle, hope it comes out as well.

It was fascinating watching you draft an actual pattern for this. When I make circle skirts, I fold the fabric from waist to hem, in half, in quarters lengthwise, and fold it, and fold it, then cut along the bottom edge through many thicknesses. It is quick and dirty, but does the trick. It allows me to get the maximum length from the fabric, since most of these skirts will be floorlength. Still, your way will be more precise and have less chance of an uneven edge, or the headaches of a dull rotary cutter going through a dozen thicknesses of fabric at once.

Questions. Do the wooden buttons last, going through the wash? Is there a reason that you cut the pocket across the fabric and not down the selvage? It is a pretty skirt. I would need it longer and less full, but it looks lovely on you. Glad you enjoy wearing it.
