Making a VLF antenna for the 2 KHz-10 KHz band and tune it in/test (old video 2008)

I had a question to show how how to make a VLF antenna. This is an old video from 2008 (or so) in which I explained that. I also show how to get insight on the resonance frequency. Less turns and/or lower parallel cap =higher VLF frequency. More turns and/or higher value parallel cap = lower VLF frequency. It has to be tested on its resonance on frequencies between say 1000 Hz and 30 KHz, see video. You can use a small variable sine wave generator. The antenna is, by the way, a loop antenna, that means that the frequency band is (by its nature) small. So with a few parallel caps in the 500 P up to 10 N range you can get to all kinds of VLF frequencies.

Thank you for this video. Another use for VLF of 2 - 10 KHz is to pick up solar wind interactions with the Earth's magnetosphere... aka auroras. Since we are going into solar max (2024-2025), this kind of antenna, combined with an inexpensive SDR could be the start of a fun hobby for some. :)

Nice video. I want to ask something: I want to make a no-omnidirectional antenna from 1khz to 300khz. In the videos I have seen the most, the omnidirectional antennas in this band can be made small and useful. For example, the mini vip antenna ... But the one way directional antenna I want. is the antenna directional? you use in the project Can I make a hand-held directional antenna in the frequency range I gave above?

Yes, when you use a ferrite rod of (say) 20 cm and wind your coil on it. Windings can be calculated or found out experimental. 1 KHZ is very low, compared to 300 KHZ. I mean: say you need a parallel capacitor in the 4N-10N range (given say a few hundred windings) to get to 1 KHZ, but to get to 300 KHZ you need (say) 100 or 180 windings and a variable capacitor of 1000 pF (at least: when you want to tune in on a specific frequency). Variable capacitors of 10 N do not exist, but it is possible to move the ferrite rod in-out to tune in on such a low frequency/frequency band. A ferrite rod antenna acts on the magnetic component of the radio signal, by moving it in a horizontal way it is direction-sensitive to a horizontal electromagnetic (radio signal) field.

Yes, when the coil is connected to an oscillator that is able to work on the frequency of the coil (VLF).

@@radiofun232 Connecting antenna, with a capacitor connected in parallel, to the output of amplifier and connecting oscillator, supplying resonant frequency, to the input. Since I am building this antenna for receiving anyway, I thought it would be interesting to test how transmitting will work, but I am not expecting any magic here - antennas of VLF transmitters are massive for a good reason I guess.

Does not matter, because it is all on low frequencies. You can try the 2 types and test it.
