Making a Walnut Shelf Unit and Spalted Birch Drawer Fronts for the Kitchen in my Off Grid Log Cabin

What's been a construction site for the past two years is now a home, and the addition of another bookcase/storage unit, an upper cabinet in the kitchen and drawer fronts for the lower cabinet make it feel more comfortable and finished. I also wrap the front porch columns with aluminum, a simple aesthetic feature that will be easy to adjust as the cabin settles and the post heights lower. I'm slowly eating my way through the freezer full of venison, bear and pork, cooking it in cast iron on the wood stove, which is burning 24/7 at this time of year. Soon, spring temperatures will encourage me to transfer most of my cooking to the outdoor fire pit and the summer kitchen, which I'll start building in the next couple of weeks. In preparation of moving the icebox into the breezeway, I clean it with soap and vinegar, although most of my food is stored in the root cellar at this time of year.
With spring seasons approaching, I am practicing shooting my longbow daily so that when the opportunity arrives, I can fill the freezer back up with bear and turkey.

I loved the old outdoor kitchen .... a lot! Same goes for the beautiful sauna he built. It's a crying shame to have had to move, but I suspect he will build the next ones even better, given what he has done with the new cabin👍🏻Take care✌🏻

The additional bookcase closes in the bathroom nicely, but I was interested in seeing how your ongoing work on the basement stairs proceeds. You've framed in the stair way, covered the down depth area and Lo and Behold!, the refrigerator fits there just nicely! Everything in its place. That breezeway works just as you anticipated. The area is a boon for the house cabin and does indeed make the cabin into a home.

Just had a thought, why don’t you make yourself a side stand that has a shelf you can pull up and it goes across the arms of your chair? It would make eating and writing much easier and you would not have to twist and contort to do so. When not in use it folds back down along side the chair. You could also make it so it could push out so you can get up and down without unloading everything off. I hope you get what I am trying to describe. Lol! Great job, btw. Cali and all beloved pets are spoiled, I know mine are! 🥰😍

Just a quick tip… You can lay some of your books flat and make a stack. This is especially helpful with the soft cover books. The stack can then act as a bookend so the upright books don’t slide or tip over. It is also visually appealing to vary the books between upright and laying flat. It isn’t any more difficult to get a book from a pile than from the uprights, either. In fact, it can be more convenient than when the upright books are falling over again and again. And laying flat helps the soft covers on books from getting all warped and bent. I like your solution for the bottoms of the posts! Neat and allows you access as required 😊

I too would love to see some of your wife’s Input to the cabin, as a woman it’s nice to see the female additions to the cosyness of a home my hubby has been a handy bloke so are all of my sons, but the women in their lives have all added to the comfort of home, so it’s nice for us to see the feminine perspective of a home, I also love watching Emily make her way, think she is a clone of dad with all her skills, this is great to see.

You talk about simplifiying life, you certainly have achieved that my friend, starting with a great breakfast, then on to a project, followed by a feast of a dinner, and maybe finish up the project, then kick back by a cozy fire and read a book, while enjoying some popcorn, and Cali looks so content and at home, it`s just incredible what you have achieved, whats not to love about this lifestyle, well done sir, watching from Michigan.

Husband & I did cupboards out of Pine up North in Wisconsin but before that we did Walnut Cabinets for his Mom !!! Down here I helped with the Cherry wood ones and bed sets for both children and our room to sleep in !!! Did Hickory ones for Colorado cabin that is like your cabin !!! I made a special room off to the end of it that I would spend more time in it !!! Had a wood stove in it and hanging swing in it that was the room ALL people went into and wanted to STAY in it !!! It was Bigger than your mud room there !!! Had enough room for a small table and a chair like yours and a bed that laid on down to sleep on !!! Like a Small cabin inside of a cabin !!! Yesterday in 2 Live Chats we Talked about Shawn James IT WAS A DELIGHFUL TIME to see your name and hear it !!! SMALL WORLD and YOU ARE AROUND the WORLD !!!

Shawn, have you considered putting a sand point in the cellar, if you could pound it far enough down to reach the water table. Then install a hand pump in the kitchen for water. Depth of the water table probably too far and your sand is pretty dense to boot. Great video, thanks.
