My first thought when I saw (no pun intended) him using that saw on that stick was that it was an accident waiting to happen. Please be careful when handling tools, it might seem like a waste of time at first but you'll kickly change your mind after losing a finger and you'll probably end up saving time and getting much better results when using tools the way they are intended!

Yes, I never saw straight down when I have access to a vice and saw horses and other tool! Don't saw towards your body ever. I was trying to be extremely careful and still fuged up.

I sawed that way as a teen once and still have a nasty scar on my left index finger. I’m lucky I have full mobility in that finger, but even after 15 years the speed at which I can twitch my left finger up and down is barely perceptibly less rapid than the right. But hey, it only takes one injury to learn a lesson for the rest of your life.

Also, a note. Don't saw towards your body. I had no vice or special tools to help me. I was going slow and still got nicked. It wasn't as bad as it looks haha

Two tips for Adam regarding the actual manufacture of the game: To make a cube from a round stick (without loosing a finger), draw a square on the end of your stick, measure one of the sides of the square then cut a round from the stick at that length. Then simply split the stick along the drawn square edges to end up with your cube. To mark wood, use a thin bit of metal heated in a fire, rather than the flames directly to make much more precise and intricate markings on your pieces. All in all a very interesting concept, I can't judge the game since I haven't played it, but the whole process of designing a fun game is an interesting undertaking and a worthy pursuit!

This looks like fun! Definitely a natural progression from dice gambling games that we can imagine Also if this is a game you'll be keeping and playing a lot, a Knucklebone die might last longer than the wooden one

You should do some CHALLENGES! Like how about a PHONOGRAPH using Roman Technology----I would suggest using a crank operated "reel to reel metal, foil tape approach myself to avoid any precision "Threaded rods". How about an electromagnet powered by a voltaic pile?---and possible an ELECTRIC telegraph. Or telephone---Even a "Crude "wireless" telegraph might be possible. Many "Modern" inventions could have been made in Ancient times if only the KNOWLEDGE were available.

Good on you keeping up the fight to restore your business and brand. Setbacks like the fire are crushing and disheartening in the moment; but such events force business owners to grow and become flexible, more resilient, and learn advanced problem solving skills. 7:30 That is not a proper 6 sided die... Any two opposing ends of a (six sided) die shud add up to 7. When ya flip it from 6 to 3 to 5; that confirms that isnt the case on your die.

@@SpaceDodo It actually applies to all multisided dice too aside from like pyramidal d4s (and odd sided dice). On any given (even sided) die the opposin sides shud always add up to 1 more than the number of sides it has. This works even for a D2 (a coin) which ofc adds up to 3 on its only two opposin sides, but also for a d20 and a properly made d100. On a d6 the difference isnt as important but if you compare a spindown d20 (like an MTG life counter die) to an actual d20 you will see that one can much more easily be marked in a very slight way to assure it to be much more likely to roll high or low as all the high numbers are clustered together on a spindown die. Its mostly a worry of folks more easily weightin a die to get high or low numbers, but it is also just an interesting fact about how dice are made and about how numbers work and a kinda fun fact about how numbers work, eg like how you can get to 21 by addin up the lowest and highest numbers between 1-20 and how that is true of all numbers.

I made Parcheesi with a brown paper bag, clay pieces and clay dice I dug up from my backyard. I use a round plastic Coke bottle cap to draw circles. I used my arithmetic skills to figure out how to even the spaces.

The real surprise is the Rhodinian player, who is obviously from the Rhodinian Empire of Conquerors. Who'd have though that a player who brought a Disintegrator gun and full Power Armor to the table would be so good at diplomacy." Commentator 1: "Truer words have never been spoken Bob. Say, did you know Parker's game originally came from old Terra?" Commentator 2: "Really, I never knew that." Commentator 1: "Yeah, I miss that system. Too bad its gone, but at least we have some fragments left." Commentator 2 "Indeed Mark, Indeed... Whoa! Look at the play the Jo'hel just made! He just might take the win this cycle!"

This video does a nice job of exploring the process of game design from a historical perspective, while also touching on the cultural and social importance of early games. As a writer, worldbuilder, and game designer myself, I have invented a handful of games for my fictional worlds and cultures. Making them actually playable, with both strategy and randomness is a challenge. Even seemingly simple rules can lead to very complex gameplay. Clever players can discover novel strategies, that make games even more interesting. And then there is the revision of rules over time, creating variants of old games, or new games entirely.

Also a bit of a casual game designer here: An additional ruling I'd add to the game is that if you play with the 5-token bet ruling, the person rolling gets 2 dice. It only requires 1 six to win the pot, but at double the odds. To further expand this rule, you can only use 2 kinds of tokens and not all 4 kinds. This is then a risky big swing to capitalize on

The core idea might be medical supplies like bandages packing stitches things like that, also if you make parking you can actually use moss because during ww1 or 2 not sure which there was a study done showing that moss could be for packing wounds

Probably would have been easier (or at least less time-consuming) to make different shaped wood tokens, instead of trying to burn identifying marks. Just saw a whole section of branch into a square, rectangular (half-square) or triangular shape, and then together with the round ones you have shapes for 4 players once you slice them up.

Inventing games is lot of fun and I remember that we did this in primary school a lot when we were bored. I invented a board game in April 2020 by myself, based on corona. You can find the game to free download and all rules on my blogpage which is linked in the video (fully subtitled) I made about the rules. Feel free to try it out and modify it.

burning marks into dice using a heated metal rod works way better than carving them. this also would have helped with burning the wooden tokens.

I'm in the process of making my own game and this gives me hope that mine might become something. I like your game quite well. Your game should have a solitary version of it too for those away from family, whether it is hunting or gathering OR quarantined away from friends. :) This looks to be such a fun game.

You could have gotten more complex with your tokens by putting something that would burn easy in a liquid form like alcohol, sugar, honey, etc. and marked them more precisely when it burned away. Clay masks would also do the trick, but the opposite way.

I was born in 1970 in Vietnam. Didn't have money growing up. I made my first Chinese chess set with discarded Coke metal bottle caps, a blue and red pen, and a brown paper bag. I write on the white plastic inside of the caps.

It's probably been said but I'm not coming through all the comments; when making six sided dice, it's standard practice to pair opposite sides to total 7. This 6/1,2/5,&3/4 should be on opposite sides. I thought I saw 3 and 4 adjacent to one another. Probably not the biggest deal. Certainly not to 'splain the concepts. But, today you learned...🤷‍♂️

Team field sports certainly existed, but it feels pretty dangerous to play lacrosse without modern protective gear while also not having any access to modern medicine 😂

No randomness in chess? The only time I beat an actual chess master was playing chaos chess with a huge bucket of luck. Basically you are trying to do things that don't hurt you but make no sense. Most the time you don't win but you survive long enough to make the game fun. To me winning is more about who's having the more fun. I used to get upset when losing on multiplayer games but now I just focus on having fun because that's the point.

Many older games used binary dice, which would be very easy to craft with ancient methods and make certain outcomes more likely than others. Something like the Australian game of Two-Up would be within the realm of possibility.

He didn’t go on for hours. He just finished what he started and in the meantime his wound could bleed and flush out any debris that may have gotten into it and ultimately avoided infection.

You make everything from wood, metal etc, but plastic doesn't break down very well I'm the environment. Given a nuclear situation or something that we are starting over, there will still be a lot of plastic everywhere. Maybe a special episode could be how to make plarn (plastic yarn) or how to make mats or pillows or rugs out of plastic bags or sheets of plastic. I've been doing it for years and I know your team could figure it out.
