Now here's a man that knows how to make an Anvil! Nice job, I never thought about putting two pieces of railroad track side by side, but that's an excellent idea and you took that rounded top off before welding your hardened steel top plate. Nice video!

Of course I usually make two of these each day before breakfast...then I wake up and step into reality. I don’t think I’ve seen any anvil build of the same quality, beauty and functionality. There will be many smithies in the future generations who will applaud this build. It’s amazing and you have every right to be very proud. Well done!

What a lot of work! The ball bearing test looks like close to 90% bounce. It is beautiful. You can be proud.

Little tip don’t hold the hammer close to the hammer head like that you’ll get hand problems watch Christ centered ironworks video that’s what happened to him and it made it almost impossible to forge hold it at the end you need to do a special hammer technique I do it it works really well.

anvils are actually best made of non hardened steel due to the fact that an errant swing with a hammer could chip the edge which is not the main concern, more the fact that that piece will fly off and can embed itself in your thigh if it's hardened steel as it's more brittle than mild steel so generally you want something in the mid range of that. Edit a fix for this could be chamfering then welding a ring around the anvil to make it's edge soft yet still have a hard surface in the center.

You wll fill the holes of the top plate on the railbroad body, so you have more than just an edge weld to hold it to the anvil, I like the final product.

Quite a amazing job...I must congratulate you on your skill but more noteworthy is your consideration commitment...well done my friend. Your video did give me a great idea as anvils are the new thing. Having the equipment to water jet the pieces for a do it yourself kit...you spent hours grinding and shaping...how many hrs less with ready to weld pieces?

It is so quiet because the top plate is made from very hard steel, which i found in my workshop. The rest of materials I've got with help of my cousin which works on junkyard.

Usually you can find railroad from a scrapyard yes but if you walk the tracks enough they usually will “throw away” the old joints they’ll cut off. Do keep in mind how heavy those SOBs are my 1.5 foot length is about 40 lbs straight up.

welder: pirotec se 250/2 electrode: metalweld rutweld 12, 4mm thick

This is all great but , considering the cost of electricity to run the tools , welding rods , the grinding discs and the inordinate amount of labor , to say nothing of the fact that there are air gaps in each of the welds that were not beveled fully , you would have been better off to buy a drop forged steel anvil from any reputable maker and been better off . Now you have an aesthetically pleasing anvil that will not respond the way that a solid steel anvil will.

It may not be as good as a reputable factory made anvil, but it certainly cost a lot less to build, and he can be very proud of the finished product. Not everyone can play out a few thousand dollars to buy an anvil. What he has made will easily suffice.

Maybe dude is in a very remote spot that would cost more to ship an anvil than the price of a new big anvil. And maybe there are no reputable anvil makers within a reasonable distance. And maybe there are no other local smiths or old places to buy them from within a reasonable distance. Maybe the dude doesn't want to use Craigslist. Not everyone is as fortunate as you are with all the money and can just go down to the corner and buy a brand new one from your local anvil manufacturer, or has easy access to areas with lots of big old anvils.

J D i think it is a beautiful anvil however it did seem to look pretty dead on the end with the hardy hole looks like the middle end with the horn is the best work surface im doing research on making one of these it would be nice to have a cutting torch to play with also i would gladly accept his old noisy one if he wanted to give it to me lol😁😁😁

I'm trying to recreate This anvil just in a different style and your anvil is a London padern anvil I'm trying to make a European padern anvil

And after I welded everything in the center I'm going to pour molten aluminum then weld the sheets of steel on the sides then find someone of that round stuff to cut the horn out of
