One thing I noted was the lack of a drip loop on the power cables going into the Conex. The cables should loop below where they enter the wall. This prevents rain from following the cable down into your e-shed.

Yes it definitely looks that way from the drone video but I ensured there was a downward angle on the wires before coming back up into the container hole

Interesting setup, I would have done an eg4 dc mini split, both for the reason of not having to convert dc to ac and because that portable a/c unit draws inside air to the outside.
@Dasper12
@Dasper12 5 ай бұрын
Might want to upgrade that AC unit to a dual hose one. A single hose creates a vacuum effect by just blowing out the hot air; making it inefficient as it will suck in hot and humid air into the container. A dual hose will use outdoor air for intake and exhaust so the internal air is cooler and stays dehumidified.
@jolilos

I thought the same but as a dehumidifier that doesn't actually matters that much.

I wouldn't choose for a mobile AC at all. They are expensive and far less efficient than a inverter split-unit...

I've bodged a second hose on before and it does help but it isn't a game changer. Yes it suck the cool out out the room to some extent but it's also got cooler air going across the hot side of the unit so theoretically would make it slightly more efficient. Wether that makes any negligible difference to cop I don't know. The vacuum is very strong we run one in my soon bedroom and when you close the door you can feel the pull from it and it's a very small unit something like 6000btu.

I'm an independent trucker and I bought a $13,000 tripac apu and over the last 8 years have put an additional $10,000 into it because it always breaks down. But when working correctly, it charges my batteries, runs the espar heater and the A/C. But recently I bought a solar panel kit on black Friday for $650 and it's amazing!! It works better than the tripac has ever worked. It charges my batteries, runs the heater and the a/c. And the best part, it never needs maintenance. I like your videos Micah

Not a bad idea for a couple ASICs, also I strongly suggest a mini split system instead of that portable unit, it's horribly inefficient and will create negative pressure inside the container which will suck in warm moist air from outside.

Also, if temperature is important, then the container desperately needs insulation. Or at least being painted white. The amount of heat that thing will soak up from the sun will be amazing.

Yes I'm thinking about putting foam panels on outside. I can't put them on the inside because I barely have a couple inches clearance as it is with two machines wide. But that's also why I went with the white container, so it wouldn't heat up as much as a darker one.
@unclejohn5012

@@EbikeSchoolYou can also modify the unit to have a second hose for intake. Has to be a unit with 2 fans though for it to work. I did it to mine via a custom 3D print and it went from not being able to cool our lounge room down now it can cool the whole house ice cold on a 38c day.

Nice setup. The AC will keep the batteries cool and that should extend their lives. You already know that but I suggest tilting the panels towards the South a bit so you can get the most out of them. Also add a screen to the AC outlet to prevent the bugs from getting into it

Micha, sorry, just a question, why not slightly tilt the whole array so that, water can run off in rainy conditions? This will do two things, 1, make sure the bulk of the water runs off and does not accumulate on the containers flat roof, and 2, provide enough airflow to keep the container roof a bit cooler and make sure the the accumulated water can evaporate a lot quicker....
@enihi
@enihi 5 ай бұрын
Would also increase the efficiency of the solar panels, angle them towards the sun.
@EbikeSchool
@EbikeSchool 5 ай бұрын
Good question, I was thinking about tilting, but we get very windy storms in Florida and these panels aren't super rigid, so I wanted less angle for less chance of catching side wides. And being so low latitude means that the efficiency loss of flat panels isn't as large as anywhere else in the US.
@GapRecordingsNamibia
@GapRecordingsNamibia 5 ай бұрын
@@EbikeSchool Yes, True, But I was thinking of something like 10 degrees, I hear what you are saying about rigidity and, that too is a factor. Those panels seem more like the "anamorphic" type and so would not be to picky if a thin piece of aluminium is strapped across the panel, especially where the folds are. When once you get leaves or some kind of debris build up the roof of your container will start to attack the paint, decomposition will start and so will the rust, you have no way of cleaning or preventing the build up. I only mention this because I have gone down this road and had clients that did not want to take the advice because of the extra cost involved for the frame, and have had to redo the layout and seal up their roof because of this....

Hello Micah, I enjoy your videos. I like the subject of this one - as we have a container on our farm that we are doing things with and adding AC sometime in the future is one of them. I could be wrong, but I'd rather err on the side of caution and try help someone save time, money and headaches. Please understand the following is meant well. Most portable solar panels, that I've read about are not meant to be in the rain too often. (I understand they gave them to you to use. But I would look into getting glass panels for what you are doing. Portable panels are for fair weather and part time use. The glass panels will stand up much better and last longer. They will also provide more output too.) I would strongly recommend that the AC drain hose not be placed on or near the wood that the container is sitting on. It can rot the wood faster, if not cause that corner to sink over time. (Our container was placed on wood, for longer than I had planned and the rain water running down the one corner made it sink more, until I jacked it up and put cap stones under all four corners to level it and allow for the bottom to air out..) Not sure about where your father lives, but around here little pest are very curious and I would put a vent cover on that AC fresh air intake. Lastly the solar panel cables going into the container need a loop in them going well below where they enter the container, so that rain water will follow that to the lowest point and drip off and not be pulled into the container by following the cable in, as they are now. All the Best, Tony

I was thinking the same thing this is not the ideal setup. I find used glass solar panels consistently on market place. Me and my dad bought a pile of 17 panels for about $70 a piece and used them for a bunch of different small solar projects. I know he likes the ease of install but I feel no one in there right mind who actually has to spend there money buying this equipment would then screw it to the top of a shipping container.

Yes those folding panels were free or promotional to you, but it doesn't take a genius to point out, folding panels are not most durable and will degrade in a permanent style installation. Not what a person starting from scratch and paying for every part would be advised to use. Solid (architectural) panels most applicable here, some flexible ones second best (because they'll last but are lying flat so needlessly more expensive); Folding IMHO are great for temporary manual deployment, and would be good for added input through a port on the side of the container on appropriate occasions (eg on overcast days or if the container gets shade in winter that it doesn't get in summer.)

Honeslty don't see how this would save any time vs buying 16 $95 LF280K's off 18650 Battery Store ($2000 at most after shipping) and an EG4 6000XP for 120V/240V ($1400) with a pretty solid MPPT built in. Add a pallet of 25 235W or 430W panels from San Tan Solar ($1000-$2000 for 5kw to 10kw of premium panels or spend a few hundred dollars and get a couple kW of some less desirable used panels that will still perform well...for under $500 plus shipping there's a lot of options for getting 4kw of panels mostly 200-250W panels) So $4000 to $5500'ish and you could have a 16kWh battery with a 6kW split phase AIO inverter/MPPT and more than enough panels to keep you juiced up in Florida. But I can't knock Pecron too much. Their pricing is honestly some of the most competitive on the market for the wH.

The Pecron units are a good, simple power source. If your actually buying things the Pecron solar are not so good $$ wise and longevity compaired to rigid panels. $220 vs $120. The single hose AC is the worst thing. All that hot air blasting from the outlet has to be replaced in the container so your pulling in humid outside air. They do make twin hose(inlet/outlet) portable units that are a lot more efficient

Good tip, thanks. I'll need to look into those twin hose style. I got a very cheap A/C I found on Amazon, knowing it wouldn't be best efficiency. But hopefully since the electricity is 'free' it won't impact me too much. I might try swapping out to a two hose unit in the future though.

Advice please. I need 15kwh a day to power for power outages that can last from a couple hours to a few days. I'm in Michigan so my solar hours is 4.48, 1,278 Kwh per 1Kw, says need 4.24 Kwh array I'm looking at a 400w, 36v panel, says output DC 39V, 10.25a max, transfer efficiency greater or equal to 21% A MPPT Charge controller of 100a, says 12/24/36/48v Auto, Max Input 100v. Max charging current 100a. Max Input volts of panels should be 30v-45v (for 24v battery). Max Input power of panels should be 2000w. Output voltage DC5v/1.5a Inverter of 4000w/8000w Peak, Pure Sine Wave Power Inverter, DC24v-AC110 And Battery is LiTime 24v 100Ah, LifeP04 Lithium Ion, Build-in 100a BMS, 2,560 Wh Energy. Up to 4P2S (don't know what that means) 48v battery 400Ah of 20.48 Kwh It's only 1000sq' apartment, 2bd/2ba. Old Kenmore Fridge, elec range, micro, dishwasher (which I'd forgo during an outage), a couple computers and tvs, wifi, lights, a mini-fridge, that's about it. No washer/dryer and if I did use my hair dryer, it's 5 mins or less, but I don't use it every day (and my housemate is bald). For obvs. reasons I wanna keep the heat on and the fridge. We'd unplug things we don't need for a few days, but I'll stick with what we've averaged over the last year anyway just to be safe at the 15Kwh a day. Also, if I'm not mistaken this setup had a good amount of room to grow? The 400w is just one panel so I can add another 400w, etc. and the other components I believe have a lot of room yet? I'm hoping to build a near-off grid home in the next few years, so I'll take it with me as obvs. I can't install anything permanent here. Am I on the right track here? Too much, too little, just right? Any part of this not work with another or could be downgraded or done better/easier/cheaper? Any part of it I don't need? Anything I do that's not here? What I have here is about $1,450. If I'm WAY off on what I think I need, please don't make fun of me. lol I'm learning and this is all new to me, but I'll get it. It's looking less like greek every day. Thanks for your time!

I ride big bikes. Overall, I still prefer to ride my ebikes and escoots. It's easier for me to travel for everyday life, which is 99% of the time and I don't have to go beyond 30km straightaway routes. Easier to ditch on the side and park in the free parkings.

The panels could have been fixed to the sea container with strong magnets with threaded inserts.

I wouldn't trust this wire to hold down the wooden frame but use some solid bolts if you don't want to retrieve your panels from the neighbor after the next hurricane...😜

Oh yea, it's definitely not hurricane proof. Before a hurricane the whole thing needs to come down. The panels will rip out even before the rope holding the frame down!

I’m not sure if it was done but you should put a mesh screen on that a/c unit to make sure animals won’t crawl into it

We used 1/4" hardware cloth for the exact reason you mention. Did't get into the video however. thx

I used to ride a bike all the time, 20, 30, 45 miles at a time. 10-12 miles a day every day, long rides on weekends. Now, homebound. Not strong enough and 100,000$ in medical costs a year. If I had an e-bike, I could get outside again.

aluminium support for the panels should be enough and not so heavy like the wood

Actually the additional weight was part of the design plan as we can get some VERY high winds (and the occasional hurricane as well !!). Regards

If this is a semi permanent install for the panels why use the folding panels? You can get 100 watt rigid panels for $65.00 each now. Those folding panels will not last very long deployed up there.
