Exotic leather on your wrist...
In this video I make a custom leather watch strap from stingray hide. Working with stingray hide is very different from normal leather as you need to cut through the hard calcium nodules.
Materials:
- Stingray leather exterior
- Buttero leather watch lining 1.2mm
- Buttero leather keeper lining 0.8mm
- Natural vegetable tanned leather core 1.2mm
- Crimson Hides polyester thread 0.5mm
- Edge paint
- Paraffin wax
- Watch strap buckle 18mm amzn.to/3wH1Slq

Hello I came across your channel about 2 weeks ago and subscribed, I really am glad that I did. About ready to dive in to make a watch strap to replace the rubber/plastic one. This is the most enlightning video I have come across yet. I have watched a lot of makers build watch straps. This video is the best example of an outstanding tutorial I have come across, the pace of the instructions is easily understood . The free pattern is a huge bonus and I thank you for that. Please keep up the excellent work it is greatly appreciated. Best wishes and respect from Port Elizabeth South Africa.

wow very nice. I process stingrays. part of the stingray is not wasted, all can be used. from good skin can be made into furniture and others, can also be made into noodles from stingray skin, salted fish or dried fish. even the peeling sand can be made like carbon kevlar. send regards for success

most of the time, how many times do you paint the edges?

It depends on the quality of the edge paint and the desired level of smoothness. With my edge paint, three times is good enough but I will do a fourth if I want it to look really good.

Great video! is stitching necessary (like at least a side stitch next to the springs bars) to keep everything together? I tried to make a watch strap once, the contact cement split apart near the spring bar after a while and can't seem to hold the spring bar in place, may be I applied the glue wrong
@TeranAtelier
@TeranAtelier Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I wanted to make a sleek watch strap without stitches and have had no issues so far with this strap that I am still using. Make sure you follow the instructions for contact cement which include preparation of area, waiting for it to dry and applying pressure when bonding. The stitches can be added in loops just around the spring bars for extra insurance.

Hey! Thanks for the pattern, what is the wrist size the it's made for?
@TeranAtelier
@TeranAtelier Жыл бұрын
Hi, the pattern works for a 6.5-7.5 inch wrist. I suggest making up a prototype so you can get the best sizing which will depend on the watch lug to lug dimensions, thickness of the leather and buckle hardware.

Hi! Thanks for Your video and explanations. Great job! Can You tell us what is the best temperature of electric creaser? Also what is the dimension of Your creaser? Thanks for Your reply. I made a few watch straps from veg tan leather, but I don't know how to use electric creaser properly.
@TeranAtelier
@TeranAtelier 3 жыл бұрын
For my creaser, I use a temperature of 250 Celsius for creasing and edge paint, and 200 Celsius for wax. The creaser tip I use is FN2, but F2 is also ok. Use the creaser after sanding and before edge beveling for veg tan leather so it is easier to get your creasing parallel 👍👍

Hi Teran, what press do you use for your stamps. Is it just pressure or heat also? Also any recommendations for a heat creaser?
@TeranAtelier
@TeranAtelier 3 жыл бұрын
I use a basic heat stamping machine with low pressure capability. For a creaser, the tip is the most important and I recommend the FN2 tip as it gives rounder lines. The actual creaser handle doesn’t matter too much as long as you can set the temperature. The creaser I use is a basic electric one.

I forgot to ask why is the watch strap not stitched. Thanks
@TeranAtelier
@TeranAtelier 3 жыл бұрын
Stitching along the border is not really an option for stingray as it is difficult to make the stitches neat because of the nodules. Originally I intended to stitch some loops around the edge at each spring bar fold but I don't think it would look as good. I am confident it the bonding of the glue and consider stitching optional and more aesthetic for a watch strap.
