Having the opportunity to switch from one medium (woodworking) to completely different one (metalwork) is absolutely refreshing. This makes the work days more enjoyable more interesting and more challenging*.
I am a beginner in metal works, so this may not be something fascinating for PROs. But DIYers like me may find this one at least a bit intriguing (or so I hope).
*challenging is a positive adjective. Challenges force progression!

Nice build! One thing you might want to try in the future. One the feet use polypropylene ( lit the plastic cutting boards) you can get it in black and it’s amazing. You man machine it but you cannot glue it. It’s self lubricating property makes it perfect for feet. They slide easily and don’t mark the floor. Best part is the color goes all the way through the material.

A great tip!! The client had some complaints about feet sticking to the floors or smth. Will try this material on a next table base;) thanks 🙏

Great idea for the leveling feet. I usually add a sheet of metal about 2 mm thick with a nut inside. Then screw the feet but I like your idea and how hidden it is. Also great work with the base it is not easy to build something with that many angles.

Love your video. For calculating the missing angle, you could have used tan-1(height/base). Just throwing it out maybe it'll help someone in the future :)

Great Base, Question at what Angle did you cut the bottom part of the legs? My metal saw only goes to 45, this seems higher.

Aciu ziurejus, Mindaugai!! Rombas man gavosi dvigubas profilio matmuo atpjautas 22,5 laipsnio kampu. Tai tavo atveju turėtų būti 12x12cm. Kuo rombas storesnis, tuo daugiau stabilumo bus. Sakyciau daryti bent 3cm storio. O kojų kampus aš pasimatavau de fakto. Issipjoviau medžio juostas ir pripjaudinejau jas kol radau tinkama kampą pagal mano stalvirsio matmenis. Beliko tas medines juostas persiplėšti ant metalo ir susipjauti

Great video and thanks for sharing x10 :) Would you change anything after having done it? Can this support a concrete top around 2300mm x 900mm?

Thanks 🙏 For wood countertops it’s stiff enough. For concrete slab I would probably thicken the diamond insert to 40 or 50mm. This way you’d get more welding surface and more leverage with those welds. And for the extra support I would probably weld a frame from angle iron or some tubing which would support the concrete surface and also wouldn’t allow for the legs to spread or sag. I hope that makes sense. But I am no expert by all means:)))

Totally agree on beefing up the parallelogram piece and instead of the angle iron, ill weld a small 900mm sq x 6mm thick sheet over the tops and under the concrete. Thanks for sharing the whole project from a-z. Would have been painful to calculate and visualize how to cut and weld those pieces together without it :)

Very nice work and very helpful video. I have a question if you don't mind. Can you please tell me the measurements of the rhombus in the middle of the construction, if the table is 2.30m x 1.10m?

First of all, Thanks for watching! If that’s the size of your tabletop, then the dimensions of the base in the video is about the right size. The perpendicular of the rhombus is double the width of the tubing (2x80=160mm). The angle is 22,5 degrees (or 112,5 degrees depending which angle you’ll measure). The thickness of the rhombus plate is 30-40 mm. Thanks about all you need to figure out the shape of it. 🤞

@@Chiselsplay thank you very much for your response. Just to be sure; the dimensions of my tabletop are 230cm x 110cm and I will use tubes of 10cm x 10cm. Shouldn't the dimensions of the rhombus be bigger? Is the table going to be stable with such base?

@@georgevasiliou1117 if you use 100mmm square tubing then the perpendicular of your rhombus should be 200mm. the angles remain the same. The rhombus ensures just a proper spacing between tubes. And acts as a place to weld and secure tubing. If you want larger base, you should lengthen the longer diagonal legs. But we used the base in the video for 260x100cm tabletop and it worked just fine

hi Errant. great video, great presentation. i am attempting this base build based off your video, but am wondering the dimensions of the table that these legs were built for. i am trying to size a table 10ftx5ft.

Woow! That’s a big one. I would increase the angle of the longer leg to reach the far end of the table. Otherwise the end of the tabletop might sag over time. Also I’d suggest making the apron out of steel to join the upper end of the legs. This should prevent the base from any distortion.

I’ve done these frames from 2mm tubing and from 3mm as well. If welded correctly 2mm should be enough.

There’s only one way to know that :D but for extra rigidity I would add a steel apron to tie the ends of the legs from spreading.

I like that beefy table base, if your friend let you, show us finished product when he is done with table top. Your project reminded me on this little older video from guy from my homeland kzfaq.info/get/bejne/atOkob2KyJbYh5c.html but yor table base is more "masculine". Great work!

@@Chiselsplay that's how you made the rhombus but not how it was welded with the legs. The camera view was mostly from front. Should have done some shots from the upper angle.
