• TOOLMake15 Launch Video

In this video I make a dovetailed infill plane from scratch using brass for the sides and mild steel for the sole. I used dovetailed construction which I cut using a hacksaw, chisel and files.
If you're willing to do this yourself be ready for a lot of filling, cutting and sanding. For the infill I used elm for the tote, apple wood for the front bun and an apricot wood for the rear infill. I didn't have enough wood of a single species so I used three different but they match pretty well.
I cut a mortise in the front bun and but a piece of lead in it to add a bit more weight to it. Final weight is about 2.5kg. For the blade I used a 6mm chainsaw bar which I hardened in water ( probably not the way it's supposed to be hardened but the file skates over it and it holds an edge pretty well.)
The video is missing peening the dovetails because I lost that footage as well as making the lever cap but I already showed the process a bit in my spokeshave video. In the video you see me using the a die stock to cut the threads in brass and than in steel. The reason for that is that I originally went with brass but it wasn't strong enough so I switched to steel. I also forgot to film a little steel part which was welded to the sole that forms a frog with wood but it's made using files just like anything else.
Some of the original features (as far as I'm concerned) are a closed handle with a steel inbetween sort of like a knife handle. I've seen that before only on a Lazarus planes which are far superior but he uses an open handle. Also I've never seen someone add lead to the plane as well as the different sized dovetails.
Also one more confusing part may be the rear infill because I cut an open mortise in it and I cut rabbet joints in both sides of the handle to fit it.
I apologize because some of the shots are out of focus and I sometimes block the camera view but when you're in a zone you tend to forget about it. The test aren't great because it's in spruce but I will use it in future projects and videos.

It looks like you went though a lot of trouble to make this plane. It is a one of a kind, showed a lot of skill with a lot of different hand tools. A hand held cut off tool would have been helpful, but you seemed to have worked around that. Good job.

@crookedriver2079

Considering the sole and plane body was made with just files, hacksaw, angle grinder and sander (well OK.. a tack weld or two) and peening, it pretty good really. I get a kick out of the parts @ super fast speed LOL!

That's a hell of a lot of work (hand work) but great job on it, not sure it's worth the effort for what it's capable to do, I'm pretty sure that any well tuned Stanley style, will outperform this plane with a lot less "elbow grease", but what's the fun in that? So, for all those who want to build an Infill, this is a good example. Thanks for sharing.

Katz-Moses Woodworking Shop I thought that a plane like that should be use for fine finishing work, not for milling, but that's me. As for opinions, as once Clint Eastwood said, "they are like buttholes, everyone has one"... If I knew how, I'd send you a sound Raspberry!, Consider a visual one...
@crookedriver2079
@crookedriver2079 8 жыл бұрын
You might want talk to folks at Sawmill Creek or other like forums about whether hand made infill can equal Stanley, Record, or Lie Nielsen before making such pronouncements.. Planemakers such as Holtey CAN and DO make infills that WILL perform as well as or outperform Lie Nielsen. holteyplanes dot com

@Garageworkshop
@Garageworkshop 9 жыл бұрын
TitusLivy777 I'm using here a cheap stick welder (only 100 Amps) . I have a better stick welder at my grandfathers workshop (140 amps) but I bought this one for small work at home. It has actually served me quite well. In the future I would love to buy a MIG or TIG machine but it is currently way too expensive for me. Thanks a lot for watching.

enjoyed your vid ... you commented 'must be a faster way?', regarding the curved guide. Presuming no access to a plasma cutter? do you have a jigsaw?guessing its standard DIY kit. Also, you could save 60% to 70% of your time by forging down the legs of your compasses. There's loads of vids on here about how to make little gas forges. keep it up.
@Garageworkshop
@Garageworkshop 9 жыл бұрын
Joe Lyons I think you meant to comment on my compass video. Yes I agree that jigsaw would be a faster way, it's just that the small piece is difficult to hold for cutting and that is why I used a chisel. I have a forge but it is at my grandparents house and it's kind of a pain to set up so if I have small pieces like this it's faster for me just to file them. Thanks a lot for watching.
