Episode 1: Introduces the OC issue and covers the OC phenomenon, including it's conception and spread. It also asks the question of how unoriginal we have become in trying to make original characters, including an experiment conducted that illustrates how similar in thinking we have become in designing them.

DON'T ever go with a name that fits their personality/backstory (Unless it's like an alias and their birth name is something else) When your parents gave you a name they just went with something that sounded nice, they had no idea how you would turn out, so neither should your characters.

Wanna know what sucks? When you make a really awesome OC, you give them a very interesting personality and stuff, and you feel very proud of yourself for making such an enjoyable character... But you can't for the the life of you decide on a name.

Question, you make an OC, you love it's design, and you haven't seen anything else like it. You show all your friends, and suddenly people start recognizing it as some other anime character or something. You end up dumbfounded to find that an almost exact copy of your character is in a famous anime that you have not seen before, and you feel as though they had stolen it. What do you do?
@ThePumpkinGoddess
@ThePumpkinGoddess 9 жыл бұрын
Alissa MewMew They most likely didn't steal anything if it's in a famous anime, especially if the anime is old. It could be a coincidence. It can take some time to animate things like games and animes, so they most likely thought of it first, but got their version out before you did. s:/ Theft of characters is one big reason for why i'm waiting till i'm VERY well known to start my graphic novel. I dont share many things about my OCs because i would HATE for that person to use my shit that i have spent years perfecting in their dumbass anime or 'OC' original DeviantArt web comic. >->( and trust me they are pretty original)

What if it's an idea that came from your own mind (like you just suddenly imagined it) but then you're drawing it and then some random person is like "oh that looks like this person in this show that you have never watched but I'm gonna say you stole it anyway!" (i'm not trying to be offensive. just wondering. cuz this could happen in writing stories too. it could have a similar concept but a totally different actual plotline and characters)

that's kinda unfair to name and shame the people who YOU asked to give descriptions of their ocs. There are so many characters everywhere now that it's hard not to have your character alike another. When I make my ocs I tend to find a character a lot like my oc and I used to change my ocs immeadiately as I didn't want to be hassled as a copy cat, but then the changed character was alike another character. It's like humans, somewhere out there someone has your exact name and someone out there who's pretty much your twin. Also I don't get the hate on people who colour in pictures to make them ocs, maybe it's just because I got friends who do it but what matters is the oc itself, not the quality of the drawing. But I only dislike it if they say they drew the copied line art.

+callmeEshai that is good advice......if it could work. Millions of people think they are doing just as you said yet, here we are, tons of "original characters" that aren't ORIGINAL characters.
@Eshiay
@Eshiay 8 жыл бұрын
Just Blake Except you're using "original" too strictly. In that scenario, every superhero except Superman isn't original, because Superman was the first to do it. In that scenario, there are no unique people. Everyone is different, as close as it is. If you put the work into making a original character, it should show, but it doesn't mean it will. It isn't easy making original characters, because if it was then it wouldn't be as much of a problem. Unfortunately, you can never be original, but you can be relatively original, more than most instead of this new thing no one has seen before. Everything is inspired by something, like how Superman was inspired by John Carter, and John Carter was probably inspired by something else. In this definition, nothing is original, because you can't have an idea, without the inspiration to make that idea. I think that it doesn't matter to be completely original, because if you have a entirely new concept impossibly devoid of any sort of inspiration, then you would have a character that no one could relate to, because that person would be unable to do anything that anyone has ever done to be that original. To be relatively original is to have an good idea that not many people think of, that most wouldn't come up with in there situation. It would be like Spider-man, a teen nerdy Superhero in a time where teens were only found in comics as pathetic sidekicks. We responded to this originality by giving Spider-man his own comic, then story, then 5 movies with more to come and still a beloved character by millions after 50 years. He wasn't original, he was inspired by Superman, everyday teenage life, spiders, etc. Some characters go the mile to be different, but not completely different. This is how it could, and should be, but not all people do this. It should work, but that doesn't mean it will. P.S. you try making a character without inspiration and make it good. Try it. I dare you.

She used to pick fights as a kid. She's sometimes a big douche, but could be a little playful. OC #2 Has jet black hair, peach skin and blue eyes. Wears a grey coloured beanie. He likes to go around the park and pick up some girls. Loves puns and joke, but could be serious. He cycles to school. Is these okay? Just assskinggg

um, not to sound like one of those defensive people? I totally get where you are coming from, and yes, the way that you did your experiment would most CERTAINLY yield very similar results. Yes, a lot of character have short black hair a lot of characters will have green/brown/orange/gold eyes a lot of characters will have breasts. (Shocking I know!) Lots of character have scars and there are only so many personalities that can be given to to a type of character But appearance is not everything, which is essentially what you based your entire experiment on. You can only determine so much from appearance? It's really the background that gives the character life. How they go about their lives, their quirks, their hobbies etc. You can't really GRASP anything in 5 sentences. SHORT sentences at that. Describe your own characters like that and guess what? Sounds like a mary sue. I'm not saying people don't do recolors and make awful AWFUL mary sues, because lets face it, they do. But try to look a little deeper than the surface???? and....maybe you all came up with similar designs because your all friends? and most likely share similar ideas and interests? ....Also, another thing, people that usually reply first on those sorts of OC requests or whatever it's called, usually DO have mary sue characters. People that take more time with their ideas, will not reply until probably MUCH MUCH later. So, thank you anyone who decided to take the time to read this, because details are all original characters are about. depth depth DEPTH and the amount of care that you put into them. Thank you.
@Eshiay
@Eshiay 8 жыл бұрын
You have a good point, but I think she said it after the people commented, then they sent descriptions. At least that would be the logical thing to do. What she's talking about is that most character designs don't have the usual quirks that make them stand out from the crowd of the majority. Also, yeah she is sorta hypocritical about the subject, but the characters she has made isn't the sort of demographic you'd tend to see. I've tried solving the problem with my own method of character design through literary analysis and in depth character study, but thats because I tend to spend a lot of time on my character designs through the writing aspect vs the art part that I'm not the best at. I can art well, but I'm not the greatest with character poses, as the dimensions confuse me at that point.
@SparkyRants
@SparkyRants 8 жыл бұрын
callmeEshai I agree with you, too. x'DD But I just can't help but find it ridiculous that she compared all those characters to something else even though only one thing may have been similar. Sarashi bandages automatically makes them a ripoff of that one guy?? Being a sulky, stand-off-ish type character automatically makes them like that other sulky type of character she mentioned?? And ESPECIALLY the busty inu-type nekomimi one. That just doesn't make any sense to me how she got the pusheen cat out of that description.
@Eshiay
@Eshiay 8 жыл бұрын
+Nero Redfield Well, if you've seen Bungo Stray Dogs, a sort of detective world where people have powers of sorts, the main character can turn into a white tiger. To reflect this, he has a long belt so that the end resembles a tail. If several cat based characters after this Anime were to have this feature, then it would feel like that it was copied for being such an original idea before hand. This is what she's referring to, as original ideas are abused to the point that it's hard to point out originality of the style. Probably at one point colored hair might have been a original idea, but then spread like wild fire.
@SparkyRants
@SparkyRants 8 жыл бұрын
callmeEshai I haven't, but I still don't think it's fair to pinpoint one specific trait to one specific character.. People IRL have black hair everywhere. People IRL have black hair and are shy everywhere. So they may make their OCs have black hair and be shy, but that doesn't mean that they're stealing from another CANON character who is shy with black hair. It may feel copied, but I can't help but think it's just ridiculous to say a nekomimi is like an actual cat character.
@Eshiay
@Eshiay 8 жыл бұрын
+Nero Redfield I meant more traits that are specific to the character, like tissue paper and colored hair. Black haired shyness is just bland at this point. It isn't anything unique and can be forgotten quickly. That's not something you want out of a character. You want them to remembered by fans with there relative uniqueness. Goku and Gon from Hunter X Hunter did this right. May have black hair, but do something great with it that makes the characters memorable to viewers. Shy characters are more defined as introverted people that have rather gained trust issues or rather have experienced a type of trauma. Shy characters don't seem to give a reason of shyness that can be uplifted, and tend to be static characters. It doesn't matter that the character is good in a literary sense if the character is easily forgettable. Although I do admit some of her pictures for the example are bs to what she's pointing out, with Harry Potter having the scar and clothes to be an original character, which it is.

i honestly dont understand the point of this video, 5 sentence is never enough for describing a character, and at the end the person will most likely draw what they have seen before. Thats why they all look the same, bc generic descriptions make generic characters. Also, the fact that in anime there are characters that look like other characters from other animes, is done for marketing. There are certain character designs that sells more than other, for example, there was an article that said that "the shy, mysterious, kudere, intelligent girl with black hair who is from a superior grade or student counselor president" its prefered by japanese men, that trope has been used numerous times in anime. Characters with brown/black hair, glasses, nerdy or shy type, inteligent are aslo likeable bc the common reader (in this case the typical otaku) identifies with them. Girls with pink hair and unrealistic personalities are considered sexy bc they are imposible to get. And the list goes on. Thats why in anime there are so many characters that look and feel the same, bc its all a marketing trick

Imo, I believe that it is original in that case, mostly anyways. Two people can think of the same thing without having interacted with each other, but to me, they're both original, Since neither of the drawings are copies of each other. Sure one might have come first, but to the person that created the character, it's original. Which is why I find it interesting how if I were to make a character, unknowingly similar to a previously existing one, people are gonna accuse me of stealing, even though that was not the case. In an example, let's say that you made a character that looked exactly like Alucard from Hellsing, give or take. But you had no previous interaction with Alucard at all. You've never seen him, never heard of him, weren't into anime in the least, nothing. Would this character that looks like Alucard be original? To the creator, certainly, right? After all, you had no idea of the first one, so there is no way that you could have copied it, and to you it's the first to have been made. Basically, you have to be super careful to keep up on literally every series the currently exists in an effort to not accidentally "steal" something from someone that you had no idea even existed. Sorry for the comment that's longer than it should be. tl;dr imo it's original to the person that created it, given that they had no previous interaction with that which was similar, though it may not have been the first.

I understand the point you are trying to make, but this 5 sentence experiment proves nothing. These people described their characters so you can draw them. So of corse all the artists are going to draw the same character! That was the point! Plus the artists mind has a lot to do with how the picture turned out. Like how you and that other artist gave the same character pigtails. That might not even have been in the mind of the creator. Just in the mind of the artist and how they generalize certain people. I think this whole subject of original characters is to big for anyone to tackle. There are so many exceptions. And quite honestly we all get ideas from somewhere. A song we once heard, a person we once new, a scene from a movie, a quote from a book. If we literally came up with something completely void from anyone else's ideas it would be a blank paper. Our knowledge is always derived from somewhere so even our thoughts are unoriginal.

I honestly didn't know any of the characters she mentioned in relation to the descriptions of peoples' OCs at all, and I was thinking the pusheen cat(sp?) thing was KINDA a stretch. And same with Taiga, there are more characters than Taiga who's like that. It's a personality trait that's existed BEFORE Taiga, so it doesn't have to be Taiga.

i agree you have to have a somewhat original premise for a character, and an original design. but as far as similarities, character archetypes, and tropes, there's _nothing_ inherently wrong with those. what matters and where your ability should lie in your writing a fictional character is *being able to build off of those things.* give them contradictions, idiosyncrasies, secrets, doubts, fears, flaws, positive qualities, try to think about them, who they are, their experiences, etc, from every angle.. a good character is a character who, while likeable, feels real. feels tangible, and like you could relate to them.. they feel real and they interact with the story they're in in a real way. if you wanna make the tsundere loli, or the misunderstood, shy loner, or the aloof, cynical badarse, you do that, but if you're serious about the character you're making and you want them to be *good,* you need to build them. (and also break them like geodes)

Can't help myself but from your talking of yours I sense the "Noone of you can do original character but me" attitude. You cannot acomplish true originality. Because if you do anything, description to it would lead to at last 5 characters already created. Not me, nor you will ever make anything completely original. And why? It is because how your brain works - your originality is simply mashing up something you saw/heard before in your life. You think your character has original personality? think hard about how it is similar to someone you know, or character you liked in something. Totally original look? Nope, mashup of something you saw. To make it little more obvious - your two creations by description - left is spiced up tinkerbell/you with some random detail in background and second is avatar character(the last airbender/korra) styled clothes/Diana (League of Legends)/something i don't know by name but saw it like two weeks ago in some game. You cannot be original because human brain can't produce original things - you can't make up something you don't know. Hope you understood what i tried to say

I'm still confused as to how you expected super original characters when people were only allowed 5 short sentences to include all you wanted [yet you still chose ones that didn't even meet all the criteria? or maybe I didn't see it but I'm pretty sure just about none of them had theme/backstory and such lol]~ I mean fur example; my ONE oc takes up at least 2-3 paragraphs on purrsonality alone if I shorten it. Not including details, appearance, and such. Like god damn no wonder people were rather vague. there's no way you can fully describe anyone with all that you wanted in just 5 short sentences lol. Also shouldn't the other artists have done the OCs you described as well too? ._ .
@Fieshs
@Fieshs 8 жыл бұрын
Yeah, my characters also have at least one page describing their personality, how they act around people or when they are alone, how they make desicions, why they are motivated, what they are afraid of, etc. Of course five sentences aren't enough. Any character (or any actual life, for that matter) would sound unoriginal and bland. But character traits are difficult to interpret into a drawing anyway (except for their pose and facial expression maybe). While my characters probably have the most unoriginal, conventional clothing ever, because I usually just draw real life clothes, I still don't think her OC's are any better. The ones at 1:25 look pretty clichéd to me. White skin, skinny, revealing and funky clothes, large breats and colored hair. Where have I seen that before? It's at the tip of my tongue, but I can't quite tell...

I think this little experiment of yours has a lot of flaws. The goal of the experiment seemed to be to point out how uncreative people are in their character designing but instead, you only revealed how uncreative you and your friends can be with your designs. There’s two big problems with this video: the descriptions given were too vague to be used for proper criticism of the characters themselves and all the actual criticisms of the characters were actually faults in the drawings. Any character given a vague enough description will sound like a bad design. Simply stating that a character has blonde hair, for example, doesn’t tell me if their hair is too short to grab a handful of or if it’s so long it touches the ground or is super curly or very straight or strawberry blonde or ‘so blonde it’s white’ or anything interesting, really. Character designs can’t be judged when all you have is ‘their hair is blonde.’ The vague nature of these descriptions might not allow for much criticism on the character itself but it does allow the artist a lot of freedom in drawing and further designing the characters. And in that field, you and your friends didn’t do so well. The designs you guys came up with were rather generic and many looked very similar to one another. This can only be faulted to your crew since the vague nature of the descriptions did allow for a wide variation of designs. I think this experiment can be used as a good art project. Randomly selecting vague character traits and designing a character out of it can be great practice. But using this experiment to criticize the creators for your poor designs is a big misstep in my opinion.

Glad I wasn't the only one who thought the same about this video. She does have a few good points in the end about character concepts but that was only the small bit of the ending while the huge chunk of beginning and middle left much to be desired. The character descriptions given were generic and vague, yes, but her and her crew's preconceived notions and judgements and. Lack of creativity was the thing at fault, yet she blamed the people's descriptions and not her skill of character design. Even worse that when she gave her own example of character descriptions and drawings, it felt like a huge pat on the back to herself as she clearly makes herself the exception to her initial proposed definition of Original Character.

Everything in the bloody world that is created is based off of things we see or have seen. It's called drawing inspiration from the things you like, why make a character that you don't like? There's no point. Tbh if you were picking at people's sonic 'ocs' or something where they literally just re-colour sonic or shadow and call it blonic or some shit XD The things you're picking at are generally fine, (also i have no idea what pigtails have to do with your point, sorry). The REAL issue with OCs are people literally just changing a colour pallet on an already existing character calling it their own, then giving it some convoluted back story that makes it somehow related to the character they re-coloured, and that is the real BS of OCs
@t00thluvr
@t00thluvr 8 жыл бұрын
The urban dictionary definition for oc is extremely off and the fact that you based your opinion off that already makes this illogical. Actual Oc's are something you make using your creativity and imagination and a character based off a character from a major franchise isn't even technically an original character in the first place. The majority of people don't make oc's on the intention of making them just like a character from a major franchise. Also it really bothers me that you think that no one's oc's besides yours are original and that you know everything and are completely right because that's obviously not the case if your basing your opinion off an incorrect definition of Oc. I was actually interested in what this video had to offer because I can agree that many oc's these days aren't that original but you're so ignorant it made everything you had to say bullshit. You took it from a completely wrong angle. You're focusing it on how everyone's oc's are the same basis these days
@GrimsonLime
@GrimsonLime 8 жыл бұрын
I don't think they've stated they were pro at this but I agree they certainly applied it by producing artwork of their own to prove their 'point' that you can make original characters. I agree this approach just came off as incredibly ignorant. Especially when they made an example by showing a picture of the new Persona 5 protagonist and the examples of 'lookalikes' is Harry Potter and a real dude and (go figure) another protagonist from a previous Persona game ---course they look alike it's by the same artist--- Griping about appearances here is what bothers me because every color has been played with in terms of eye color and hair color. Even unrealistic eye colors has been done. Different sclera colors have been done. Different pupil designs have been done. What separates characters from each other is the backstory, their personality, their strife. Even then that could have all been done. What could have helped create some kind of control group here is basic questions that would further define a character so that everyone would have a chance at trying to further develop their character. Rather than beat down on everyone offering to submit their brain child for this classic DA shark tank. Wouldn't you think so?

Wields 2 katanas and pistols, and uses the element of electricity. 4. Used to be part of a group that brought peace to a world war until it disbanded. 5. I don't really think the characters she designed were very original or unique either :'D I mean the ones that were submitted weren't, but I don't think hers ended up much better really. And I think the people who got the free commissions were giving physical descriptions because, well, their characters were getting drawn. If you wanted more than that out of them you should have given them a few sentences for physical description and then had them do a brief description of the personality and backstory. Even if it ended up unoriginal then, though, most of the people who have these OCs are young kids and teens. You'll notice if you peruse deviantART for a while that a larger amount of older users have better thought-out OCs, with more unique twists and originality. I think everyone starts out pretty bland. It takes time and thought to grow to the point where you can confidently create something fresh.

Jing Ting Ong And that is why it's best for self inserts to be caricatures(which means the primary parts of that person's personality are exaggerated to a degree that is interesting to read) if at all. It really takes someone who's both very knowledgeable about how the world they are making fan-fiction for works, and how to effectively write an exaggerated version of oneself, to make something worth looking at. Now, while I use the medium as a way to gain experience in creative writing(though, I'm smart enough to NOT publish said works), I always keep one thing in mind: "When writing fan-fiction, always make the main characters of the original work more important than the OC"

To be honest your two descriptions are all somewhat unoriginal in a way... Perhaps the second description not so much, but the first one is definitely too overdone, even counting the background. And there are some loop holes in your central idea, about your question regarding how unoriginal characters had become using persona 5 as an example, all of them came from modern and somewhat similar backgrounds, and that is a common haircut in real life. You don't just expect every one under a modern setting to have crazy unrealistic yet "original" anime hair, do you? Before debating about the originality of characters, check out the setting. Overdone settings give overdone characters(. And sometimes, characters can be too designed, with people adding numerous unnecessary things in a miserable attempt to make their characters more "interesting" and "original", these types of characters tend to fall flat personality-wise or cannot fit into the setting/story smoothly, easily OOC.
@umedaprince
@umedaprince 8 жыл бұрын
This can also easily lead to Mary Sue, if not careful. Personality-wise, it's actually easier to use a simpler physical design to express the character's personality. Also, common in the acg world, the characters usually fit into one or more stereotypes, but this is not to say that they are not original. They actually have a lot of potential room to develop into a very 3D, not flat character through the course of their story. I think it's somewhat unfair to judge the character's originality through a five-sentence description. The story molds the character, and OCs without stories are just flat pieces of stereotypical meaningless drawings.
@NoxMoony
@NoxMoony 8 жыл бұрын
EXACTLY! You put this so well. Persona 5's main protag looks like an ordinary kid but that is exactly the point. She also completely forgot to show his masked form but that's besides the point. What you said about an overdone or "too designed" character is a very valid issue. Going out of your way to make one's character TOO original can lead to a very superficial character.

you don't really base originality in characters on personality. many ppl can share the same personality. you would have to go into more detail to see a difference. a vague and verbal one sentence description? How do you expect to get originality and detail out of that?? That's not freedom.

This is a rather old video and I hope you've realized that your way of seeing OCs isn't bad, but it is hardly accurate. 'Most of them are just Mary Sues and copy pastes?' Are you serious? A true Mary Sue/'bad' character is hard to find, in my opinion. I've seen my fair share, but the number of characters by that are unique far overwhelm these 'Mary Sues.' And just because something looks similar doesn't mean it's unoriginal. From your definition, people will end up making Mary Sues in an attempt to be 'unique'. A true OC is determined less by their design than their personality. Even if a character looks 'ordinary' say, Hiro from Big Hero 6, whom you bluntly called 'unoriginal', that doesn't mean he's a bad or generic character. It's an OC's character traits that determine whether they're truly an interesting character or not. Hiro doesn't have a ton of character traits, and he doesn't need to in order to be interesting or relatable. His design is quite simple, but you will still be able to recognize him because of his outfit choice, speech and behavior. It saddens me to say this, because I am completely against being rude, but that description was terribly unsatisfactory. And those 5 sentence descriptions? You really don't have even a partial grasp of what is an 'OC', judging from this video.

whether they did asked for permission or not, I still feel bad about those people, cause who knows that maybe those OCs they submitted were very well thought and loved by their creator and just because of giving vague key points of how thier OC would look like because these people said so and its first come first served free commisiom where as they need to submit their entries as fast as they could to get the chance of their OCs to be drawn, as a result their OCs are being insulted in the public, that would really hurt cause you created these characters with your heart and soul and some people make fun of it for entertainment

my OC is supposed to represent me, and is kind of just there as a mascot of sorts to represent my work. I designed her, therefore, off of some of the things I value; I gave her the face of an owl, because many of my friends describe me as smart, and the owl is the symbol of Athena, the goddess of wisdom. I gave her antlers for a few reasons; firstly, I really enjoy being out in nature, I come from a hunting family, and nature in itself represents a mystery to me, as well as a problem to be solved. it also by extension represents curiosity, and an eagerness to try new things and to branch out every so often. I gave her the body of a wolf, for 2 reasons: 1, because I kind of cheated and started out drawing her as a wolf, which is pretty much my go-to when drawing a new character, and because a love for canines is common among my watchers, and people I watch (on deviantart, of course). secondly, because wolves are social animals, but can quickly become lone wolves at any given time if the pack decides they don't like it. I can relate to that through some years of experience in loneliness. I think this also helped me become much of who I am today, it showed me how to become a stronger person, how to avoid changing myself for others, but at the same time how to avoid being excessively resistant to change; essentially, how to accept conformity as a good thing, and that while change is absolutely terrifying, we have to accept it, because the world moves on wether or not you go with it. I could be honest and say I named her oculus because I just thought it was a cool name, or I could be dishonest about why i really named her that and give that name some meaning. in architecture, an oculus is a round hole in a dome through which light comes into the building. it can either be left open, as it usually was in Roman architecture, or it could be covered with glass, as it usually is today. oculus could easily symbolize the gap, the missing piece, the flaw; yet, it allows light to vanish the shadows, to make them retreat behind corners.

Creating original characters is not walk in the park especially when you've already seen hundreds of other fictional characters from other sources. I happen to be working on a few dozen right now and it's coming along extremely well, but I still encounter serious issues with staying an original. Here are a few things I advise you to do to make an original character(s). 1. Stay disciplined Study different forms of knowledge as much as you can so you have plenty more options to think outside of the box. If you don't do this then it can become easy to just copy from a character that you've already seen instead of seriously constructing every aspect of your character from the ground up piece by piece. This can be things like making sure you understand character personality, traits, visual styles, themes, history, intelligence, ambitions, time period, etc...you name it , you can use it, however just make sure you manage it as many ways as possible. Also, try to imagine your character in as many situations as possible, that way you can make them far more interesting and make your audience curious to see what would happen if your character was thrown in this or that. 2. Find out why you like other characters you have seen If you can properly analyze the reason as to why you enjoy other people's original characters, then it will be tremendously easier for you to take and invert the pieces you like and throw away what you don't like. This will create confidence that the reason you like someone else's character is because of very specific and personal reasons...not because you just like the someone else's entire character in general. Therefore you can use those individual reasons to make your own character, and no one will be able to completely tell that you were inspired by someone else's character. 3. Don't get bent our of shape if your character shares similar traits with other original characters It's easy to be a copy cat and just make a character that looks like someone else's, but it's also possible to go to the other deep end and get worried that your character might have something in common with another character. Don't worry, because it's not unrealistic if two or more people are similar to each other in some ways. As long as you follow steps 1 and 2 well enough, if you ever run into step 3 issues then you may just have to change 1 or 2 things about the character you are designing and then the problem can be solved. There is no such thing as having a perfectly original idea unless you are God Himself. Any picky person can eventually find ways to compare your character to someone else's if they really tried hard enough. 4. Don't make more characters than you can handle I didn't say don't make many characters, but don't over populate your cast and end up with short sighted, generic, narrow minded, or stereotypical characters. As a result, you might end up with a group of characters where some of them are extremely well developed, and others are very shallow. To accommodate for this, it may be very tempting to just make your shallow characters look like some other great existing characters that someone else made just to say that your cast of characters are well developed...and they may all be, but what's the point if half of them look just like other characters that were already made. My advice, try to focus on one character at a time, and if you want to make many characters then take your time. It may take years to build all your characters. 5. Be as personal about your characters as possible It's one thing to like a character you drew, whether or not it looks like someone else's, but it's another thing to have a personal connection with that character that only you understand fully. It's one of those things where if you cannot tell yourself every individual thing about your own character without admitting that you just wanted your own version of another character that was already made, then you might have a serious problem. The best thing to do is to make your own character represent personal emotions and situations that have happened in your life, because your own life is completely different from someone else's...especially the most personal things that have happened to you. I hope this list really helps those who are struggling with original character designs. Oh yeah, one more thing...make sure you can describe your character better than anyone else.

Only real color to pop is the red eyes. Dresses kinda "Edgy" with lots of piercings and a leather jacket. Is about 5'6" with dark blue hair (His bangs pinned back but a piece is still in his face). #2. Is actually a big sweet heart that just wants to be an artist and be with his cute smol boyfriend Damen who could probably crush 3 whole melons between his thighs even though he's like 4'11". He is also a big meme and is often the friend to get himself into some weird ass shit which would result into stories sounding like "So then my foot's stuck in the toilet, the dog's having a seizure, i still have half a pie left-- But then i put cheese on it and it looked like a pineapple!!". Would probably go to a water park and die not by drowning, but by falling off the slide. #3. His parents died in a freak car accident which left him and his older brother with their abusive aunt. They escaped a couple months after moving in and couldn't hold a job very well. So, they ended up stealing from people to make their money and live in a condemned home far away from most society. He and his brother both hate it, but that's what they had to do until the other boys came into the picture and helped them out. #4. Could literally be set on fire and still talk about nice things like the amazing weather. But he hates reliving his past and going through bad events. He normally ends up breaking down and shutting himself out until the bad times past. That often resulted in drug abuse. #5. His mother was an amazing singer and that played a big role in his future. She would sing to him every night and he strived to be like her when he grew up. In his attempts to be a musician he was often thrown to the side and not taken seriously. He didn't actually become big until he got 6 other boys to be in a band called 'Six to One' with him. (Damen -his BF-, Jack -his brother-, Harrison, Connor, Octavius, & Alex. Some other characters who don't actually preform with them is Kaleb -their camera/lights guy-, and Rylee -their body guard once they get really big-). _(WOO I THINK I WENT OVERBOARD BUT ITS FINE XDDD!!)_

No character is COMPLETELY original. Ever. There is always another character or something else that could be compare to it and claimed it was "ripped off" of that. By the way you describe it, it seems to you that the only way to create a FULLY original character is by giving it an overly extravagant backstory, fabulously amazing physical design, and make it extremely garish in general. AKA: a Mary Sue / Gary Tsu. Not only is this video hard to follow, but it is not very helpful by any means. I did not walk away thinking "Hey, they made some good points. I think I'm gonna spruce up my character a bit." All I took from this video was "Wow. This person seems to think of themselves a superior to the peasants who are obviously untalented and have no originality even though I only gave them 5 short sentences to describe a character while they could probably write an entire book on their character and their story. But we'll just forget that because look at me, I look edgy but actually am not cause hey look how kawaii desk I am!" uhhhhhgggg -_______-

When you think about it, very few things good are 100% original. What I've seen is that if you try to do something completely original, your work might be called uninspired, boring, or weird. This doesn't happen all the time, but I've seen it many times before. Then, if you try using inspiration from something else, you may use too much and get called a rip-off. So, social media wise, creating a complete 100% OC is kinda hard for some people.

I personally follow a method of exclusion. I never sit down and decide "I should make an OC", mostly because when I do I can't come up with anything. I study the setting, and usually, when I do, some aspects of it strike me and I come up with a character that has something to do with them. For example, I once made a VtM character who was a soviet spy, and used his backstory to expand on the "hidden" side of the Sixties in my country. I had fun making up vampiric conspiracies behind the real-world events of those years, especially because there was a TON of material to work with. I usually come up with many different ideas, and choose those that best fit the setting and the tone. IMO, the setting is simply VITAL for a character, because just as they shape the world, the world shapes them. What do you people think?

I find it interesting that the claim was being made that the OCs were the ones adhering to stereotypes due to the results the artists drew off of their descriptions. Wouldn't two of the artists choosing the same hairstyle for someone who vaguely fit into the Loli category reflect more on their stereotypes (or the fact coincidences exist) than on the originality of these OCs? Also, of course you're going to draw your own characters way better and more complex, you know them beyond what was written and clearly far more time was spent on them. The argument can definitely be made that many OCs are largely unoriginal, but this was an extremely flawed and biased test that seems largely irrelevant to that point. Also, real people look similar to one another. Its revolutionary, I know, but there are only so many variations one can make with tghe base humanoid character.

This is actually really helpful. I don't draw a lot, but I write, and making a good OC is very hard. I always tried covering the big over-all story first, without considering the small ones that help get to that. And sometimes I make my character more complicated than they need to be. This method here might help that a lot. Thanks for the share!
