I like having my homemade denim char cloth rolls but being able to make more char materials with what's essentially an inexhaustible supply of natural material just makes so much more sense.

Fantastic video! Although not always necessary I always make a pin hole. It allows me to know when it’s done. When no more steam comes out of that hole, it’s ready. Thank you ! 👍

A tie-wrap is single use - wrap the area underneath the lighter gas trigger with bank line or similar to use as a safety, which everyone should be carrying. Great video!

I use the same method to char balsa wood for making black powder. After learning about the invaluable resource of Fanwood through your channel, I have been thinking of trying it for making char for blackpowder since it has a natural accelerant in it. It may make a more energetic powder. On the other hand the process of charing may remove all or at least most of that natural accelerant. It still would be a cool experiment to see what the results would be. Seriously love your channel though. I hope you never quit sharing your knowledge and experience.

Love your presentation style, combination of military teaching and laid back cool guy with a beard LOL. I always thought it was funny when people poked a hole in the Altoids tin, thinking holy crap the hinges are enough! I used a tin from something else, punched a hole, got to charring. It's fun to watch the plume occasionally ignite. In one instance the pressure built up so much it actually popped the lid off and ruined my batch! Poked a slightly bigger hole and good to go. Thanks!

Always think twice before throwing away a "used up" lighter. I drill a 1/4" hole and put a lanyard through the "tank" portion and attach them to anything that I might have with me in a "need a fire" situation. The lanyard makes it more difficult to mistake for a "working" lighter and they provide reliable one-handed ferrocerium. These are especially useful in my vehicles with appropriate tinder because they remove the concern about butane in a hot car during summer months.

I cut the tank bottom off hollowed out the center stuffed waxed cotton balls in, saved my bacon when broke down, spent long weekend in tarp shelter.

@@jonathanechols9985 No, the cheap Bic lighters. I just find it comforting to have one-handed ferrocerium that can be struck super accurately with either hand.

What I'd like to add to this otherwise great vid (if you allow): Gas emitted during the charring process ignites in a blue-ish flame where it exits the tin. No need to panic (like the idiot I am did, thought it must have caught a flame in there, ruined the process - save yourselves that frustration :-D)

Hey Joshua This is an unrelated request to this video. I'm just posting here because it's your latest video and I figured you're more likely to read my comment :-) Can you do a video on nuclear falout survival? That is to say, what to do - assuming one survived the initial bomb blast - in the days and weeks after, what kit to have at home for a bug-in scenario and what to carry in a bug-out scenario pertaining to fallout. What reasonable steps can we Europeans (who mostly have brick and stone built houses without basements) take to prepare for the event that Mr Putin makes good on his threats. Thank you

I completely admire you. However, just like CC, I find it hard to relate to both of you hero's when you hastily say something like that branch, or that fire triangle, instead of THE fire triangle etc.. It urks me! Not that you should care and I will gladly put up with it. Butt im just saying brother
