🍊Squeeze The Orange, making bioplastics from orange peels
Squeeze The Orange is a project by Susana Jurado, Elisenda Jaquemot and Nuria Bonet, created in response to the open call, Remix el Barrio, by SISCODE - El Barri Circular, to reimagine what is possible to make with locally produced food waste. Susana, Elisenda and Nuria used orange peel to create a new bioplastic textile which could be used in a similar application to leather. This recipe is easy to follow and with the right ingredients and equipment can be done in your home kitchen!
✍️Ingredients:
20g wool fiber
5L water
120g orange peel
Calcium Chloride
125g sodium alginate
421g glycerin
56g coconut oil
✍️Equipment:
Strainer
Scale
Spatula
Shredder
Scissors
Frame
Cooking pot
Funnel
SISCODE is an EU research project consisting of 10 labs and makerspaces across Europe - ‘El Barri Circular’ being the pilot of Fab Lab Barcelona. Remix El Barrio, an initiative from El Barri Circular, looks to understand how we might reimagine food waste in our local neighbourhood of Poblenou. This highlighted recipe is one of nine featured during an exhibition of designers and makers transforming food waste into new biomaterials. At Fab Lab Barcelona, our research areas look to further explore the role of maker spaces in creating a more circular economy - thinking global, acting local.

In another KZfaq using orange peel the impression I received was that the orange peels did not add anything necessary to bio-plastic. It was merely a way to incorporate a “garbage” item into the product. Is that correct? The other KZfaq was not in a language I could understand so it is likely I misunderstood. Could you please clarify the purpose of the orange peel? Perhaps the citrus oil and citric acid in the peels prevent some kind of mold. Or is there some other constituent in the part of the peels that is used after grating that adds to the plastic? Thank you very much. I don’t usually watch KZfaqs that have no speaking (even if a language I don’t understand) but yours was very clearly presented and worthwhile. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

@matiasortega1403
@matiasortega1403 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I did it last week but the drying process is still very slow: You can buy some motifs. First, I have not used calcium chloride and I think it is necessary since its property is to absorb moisture and at the same time classify the material. The second thing that happened to me is that I use a completely closed frame, and you need to use a frame that has a breathable fabric underneath so the material can evaporate water faster and dry. Then, because of the mold, I suggest covering the material with a cloth to prevent bacteria from entering and contaminating it. Greetings I hope you serve yourself the advice

Hello, I used the calcium solution before and after a large piece of plastic,bsince the smaller ones have been successful, and I found the plastic to have produced a lot of mold.. I checked the calcium solution and I saw black flakes inside, which I guess meant it was expired. Do you think it was moldy because of the calcium or the room conditions? Such as kitchen cooking vapor etc..?

dear Carla, if you have mold, i would suggest to accelerate the drying process by using ventilators or a dehydrator. mold appears when moisture stays long on the material.

How is this anything more than several fillers being added to calcium alginate? The orange peel doesn't add any particular property to the calcium alginate. And how does this solve the issue of calcium alginate's hygroscopic properties? It may not be soluble in water but it'll surely absorb it and go soft as soon as a rain hits it. I fail to see its benefits in clothing.
