As Dillinger Escape Plan's debut record "Calculating Infinity" celebrates its 19th anniversary, founding member Ben Weinman shares the story of the making of the album and its predecessor, the critically acclaimed "Under The Running Board" EP. Also features Greg Puciato discussing the impact of the early records on him before he joined the band in 2000, and a moment from the John Dillinger documentary that played a role in naming the band. Crazy that it was all recorded to tape without a computer
@drownthepoor

Haha, computers were a joke for recording back then, unless you were doing electro stuff. Pro Tools and the other big DAW's started back in the mid 80's with Atari/Mac/Sony PC's, but studios were still all about tape. Digital was a sin even after the tech caught up. A lot of my favorite music was done on "cheap"ish tape machines in early 90's- 2000's. Dillinger is sooo good live, I saw them here in Baltimore(Greg's hometown) and they were insane. Greg blew fire and the liquid hit my face. They got fined like 10 grand because indoor pyro had just been banned because of the Great White concert tragedy.

I encourage you to learn more of the history of DAWs my dude, Soundstream was the first DAW created in 1977, and Pro Tools was officially released in 89 and was still incredibly limited on what could be done until the mid 90s. And pretty much all the albums that were done on tape were on expensive machines, there’s no way around that haha. Even if you can find a cheapish tape machine, tape is expensive, and parts/maintenance is hella expensive. But worth it in my opinion, that glorious pure analog sound 🔥

And Botch’s we are the romans came out between 1999’s CI and 2001’s Jane Doe. *edit* I got this wrong, Botch’s We Are The Romans was released in 1999. American Nervoso from Botch was in 1998, when that came out a few years previous songs like “Thank God For Worker Bees,” “John Woo,” and “Hutton’s Great Machine Engine” were like nothing I’d heard in terms of composition. Still rock those tracks regularly. And KARP’s s/t album. Perfect work out music.

@@RustinChole yeah and I'd throw in anything Coalesce did but particularly '012 Revolution in Listening' man..late 90s through mid 2000s we were spoiled for choice on heavy music

@@onewhitepony lol man that reminds me - I saw Coalesce on the “Functioning on Impatience” tour, they opened with the song “you can’t kill us all,” - the band was setting up, I didn’t realize the singer was right behind me, (I was right up front and center of course) and he launched into the vocals that open that song but without a mic. “What more do you want from me….” and the crowd was shocked into total silence, and we made room around the guy, the drums kicked in with the vocals, but still no mic, then the guitarist threw the mic to the lead singer in perfect time for him to bellow “YOU CAN’T KILL US ALL” and the whole band kicked in.🤦🏻‍♂️ Afterwards, I went up to him and was like “holy fucking SHIT man. You guys rock balls.” He looked at me casually while wrapping up his mic chord, and said “oh yeah. I know.”😂 Jesuit opened that show, epic. I miss when every city had a legit hometown hero act like Botch, or The Locust, (or anything JP or 31G related) Coalesce, Converge, Dillinger, just a tsunami of young, unbelievably talented trailblazers. The VSS, KARP, Clikitat Ikatowi, Shotmaker, …. I’d trade the internet and iPhones etc for a thriving DIY scene like that, if it was possible. I know it sounds silly but if I had a time machine, seeing BOTCH in 1998 at a tiny club in Olympia would be my first stop. Next would be Drive Like Jehu and Unwound, with Sunnyday Real Estate opening, back in 1992. Ashamed to say I’ve thought about this alot. However I do think there’s amazing music being made, by Deaf Club, METZ is okay, Daughters is over but the last records (like the ones before it) was brilliant, super bummed I just missed Black Midi in seattle after stumbling on their new single “welcome to hell.” Black Country New Road is a lot like …. Slint, A Minor Forest, and Neutral Milk Hotel and I mean that in a really good way….let’s see…… IDLES is pretty good…. I like the new The Smile album…. But it’s not like …. If you had asked me to list my favorite DIY acts in 2000 it would’ve been pages long. Now I only find maybe a few records a year to get legit excited about.
