Classic tape echo effects are perfect for a variety of genres like lofi hip hop, indie pop and much more. While there are great plugins out there to capture this sound, you can get an authentic sounding tape echo effect using just stock plugins right in Ableton, especially if you know how to combine them.

Great video. From a different angle, how much time does it take to acquire this knowledge, to use these stock plugins? Comfort, laziness, instant excitement etc are bad reasons to go for the quick buy, but there must be a trade off. A hundred buks for most of us is a lot of money, so you are willing to spend time, but how about 30 (when plugins are on sale)? In that case it might be worth it.

I try to look at a plugin and learn what each knob does individually. Sometimes it takes me several days to really digest everything that a plugin can do. One tip that really worked for me was to turn knobs much more aggressively, so you can really hear the differences. I learned that from a professional mixing engineer who would turn the EQ knobs REALLY aggressively. He said he did that because you want to feel the difference. If you go through each parameter in the plugin that way, I think you can get your bearings and better understand what each thing does.
