I usually only make coffee this way when I'm camping but I wanted to do it today for some reason and decided to film it. It's really great way to make coffee and I'm really intrigued by the method. It makes a good cup of coffee but it takes a few tries to to get it down cuz you're basically going by the color of the coffee. And I use different beans every time I make coffee so it's been a lot of trial and error. these are really inexpensive coffee pots and they travel really well. interested in picking one up. I'll put a link below.

I have used a vintage pyrex flameware percolator for >25 years now. The secret is to NEVER let the pot boil. That makes the coffee bitter. I start it out on medium heat and keep my eye on it. As soon as it starts to percolate, I turn the heat down as low as I can get it and still maintain a park every couple of seconds. my sweent spot is a slow, steady stream of bubbles rising from the pump. I know this takes more time than most people who push a button to get their coffee but it is so worth it!

I inherited my dad's camping percolator 30+ years old. I shined it up. I moved to Florida and for the first time in my life have electric stove. Big adjustment. I grind my own coffee coarse so I don't get coffee particles in bottom of .y cup. Makes great coffee. All I've had to replace is the glass dome.

Once it starts perking, you lower the heat so it doesn't get that bitter, burnt taste..,and limit perk time to about 8 minutes.

Everyone says the percolator way makes it bitter. I think that needs to be tested. Percolator rotates water. Drip coffee sits on a burner that.. burns it and makes it bitter.

You can always increase the grind size to counteract over-extraction/bitterness.

Percolator allow you to have more of a double shot so that could cause bitterness

Use a filter. Mine turned into watery grounds.

You dont need a filter if you use coarse grounds like he did.

You can pour some cold water into the pot and stir. Grounds will sink.

Also wet the basket before adding grounds, it packs the bottom for a tight base. You could also nerd out like me and get some coarse ground for the bottom layer and top off with finer grounds.

I slowly bring perc to boil, and then I add the stem&tray, reduce heat to low (just enough to bring the water out the stem). And let it go for 6-8 mins, take off the heat for 1min, put back on for 1min bubble. Let stand 5 mins and enjoy.
