At 9:22 we have two examples using 更 with 比. But I wonder if 更 is necessary, because 比 already includes the idea of "more". So 汉字比声调难 = Chinese characters are harder than tones. And 他比我会游泳 = He can swim better than me. I think that when 更 is used with 比 it usually means "even more" in the case that three things are compared (rather than two). For example: 我比妹妹高, 但是哥哥比我更高 = I am taller than my sister, but my brother is even taller than me.

“汉字比声调难”，可能是声调很简单，汉字难一些。“汉字比声调更难”说明汉字和声调都很难，但汉字难的程度更高。再比如，"他比我高”只是单纯的比较（可能他160cm, 我150cm, 两个人都不高); 如果是“他比我更高"说明我和他都很高（可能他190cm, 我185cm)。A比B更+Adj. 可以理解为有一个隐藏的含义，A 和B都很Adj.

It is just a basic way to make comparisons in Mandarin Chinese. We designed this lesson to help students to get an outline of making comparisons in Mandarin Chinese. Can you use 像 instead of 和/跟 in the "...一样...“ pattern? Does it contain the same meaning?

No, because 像 is short for 好像 (to be like, to look like).

AS FAR AS I CAN TELL, in the first one you are telling that the person "a" and the person "b" have no the same "level of intelligence". So you know that they aren-t the same, but you don't know who is cleverer. In the second one you are sating that "a" is no as clever as "b", meaning that "b" is the cleverer
