@3447_ I'm not saying machining is any easier than forging or casting. I know because I can and have done casting, machining, blacksmithing, and I work full time as a carpenter

If you use a leaf spring instead, then youn can even skip the forging step. Plus it might actually compare in draw weight to real medieval crossbows that could punch though plate armour.
