The factories went to everything - one-big-piece, multi-layer PCB. Imma going to suggest old-school luxury trouble-shooting and cable yanking, excess cable in hub, crimp no-splice no-SMT, no bread board. Inline "PCB" and flexible, is old harddisk 40pin or 80pin cable select. Nowadays they hype serial-comms signalling and flexible-PCB and organic-LED and ... Nevermind.

One piece mobile phone board need separate piece for outside connector to avoid transferring lever-effect torque and break main board. Things were more sensible in the past. Separate lever-effect. Nowadays they bread-board to break-board. Flex cable in-between big small PCB was genius.

Great video, I have an old vcr with one of these ribbon cables one end is out but the other end won't budge are they sometimes glued into the board or will it come out with some more gentle persusion ?

Thanks for the tutorial. One question, I need to connect my motherboard to a programmer, the mobo has 9 pins while the programmer has 8 pin. Do I need a custom cable? or a 10 pin idc would work?

I often connect mismatched headers with ribbon cable ( 25 pin DB to 26 pin IDC for example), ignoring the unused pins. As long as the number one pins align, not all pins of a connector have to be used/wired. Just double check your pinout on each header. The ribbon cable can be pulled apart at the ends if you need to change the pin order as well. 👍

For ribbon cable, the red conductor is pin-1/conductor-1. Positive and negative pinout will depend on your board and project. Make sure to follow the manual and data sheet for your specific hardware.
