We built a dining table from very large sugar pine slab. Sugar pine got its name from the sweet resin that Native Americans used as a sweetener. The wood has pleasant odour while it gets worked on, it reminds me of sweet candy.
The wood had been laying outside for a long time so it had several spots damaged from bugs and rot. We had to fabricate a special attachment for our Makita hand planer in order to remove those spots and to evenly plane this large piece of slab. We used sawmill rails as a flat surface, but flat concrete floor would have worked fine too.
As always Nanny is an excellent helper and loves to participate in every project.
