In this video, I'll take you along as I make two different kalimbas. One from Epoxy resin and another from wood.

The reason the wood one doesnt sound good is due to the large hollow in the box for a resonance chamber. Good in theory but as the bridge is not totally immobile its not enough to transfer the sound into it the piece fails. The flex in the top pannel absorbs and dampens the sound. The veneer also works against you. Put a block or support on the inside under the bridge and go with actual hardwood and youll be golden

Beautiful work, especially with the resin kalimba! This may be my inner chemist speaking, but when sanding a kalimba (or anything else, really), please maybe consider wearing a mask :) Breathing in the fine dust produced in the process is not exactly healthy, so you do might want to avoid doing so. I am aware that the video is two years old at this point, so maybe this is more of a note for those planning on making their own kalimba in the future. That being said, thank you very much for showing your work, it is impressive!

Im curious to make one myself, but im having trouble figuring out if the wood pieces that put tension on the tines are glued/screwed into the box? or is it held on by tension from the keys alone?

@makermind20503 жыл бұрын
Hmm ...good question, I think around 500ml. You can just calculate the volume of a box if you don't know how much resin to prepare.

Hello, a year ago I thought about selling resin kalimbas, because I live in an area of Colombia where they are hardly sold. I was scared because I didn't know if the resin was going to allow me to make the kalimba sound good. I saw your video and it motivated me too much, I fell in love. Yesterday I performed the first kalimba, it was beautiful but the sound frustrated me a bit, no note is lost, however it sounds very little, I know that because I do not have a soundboard it is one of the reasons why my kalimba sounds lower. I want to know if you know any tricks or something to make the kalimba sound its best, if perhaps the sound also depends on the thickness of the keys or the thickness of the resin. Please
@makermind20503 жыл бұрын
What do you mean with Soundboard? Sorry I am not sure what you ment. Well first of all I don't have any kind of knowledge about making kalimbas I just made those two and that's it. That being said tho one thing that was very obvious, was how deep and low the sound was that the resin one made. At the same time that sound is beautiful but it isn't very loud. I would love to know if it the same when you buy an acrylic kalimba because I wouldn't see how to drastically improve that. Well if you want to find out I would suggest to just buy a few DIY kalimba sets (I bought mine on AliExpress for like 2$ each) and then mold a few resin kalimbas with different thicknesses. Well anyways sounds amazing and I think many people would be truly facinated as well as exited to buy a kalimba from you. I hope you'll manage to find the motivation to keep on with this project 🔥

can the bridges and the body be a single piece of wood? or is there a reason it's separate pieces?

Like it :) i realy want to make on diy kalimba do you know wich materials? I have wooden pièces that my father dont use anymore so i think that its good enough :)
@makermind20503 жыл бұрын
I am everything but experienced with wooden instruments hahaha. But what I do know is that you try to use as thin wood as possible that is as massive as possible. But because of how hard it is to find strong yet thin wood you can actually just build it out of plywood. To my surprise many expensive guitars are actually made from plywood. If you make a solid kalimba without a hollow middle it's gonna be a lot more quiet but in my opinion has a nicer tone to it. Have fun playing around with it! Hopefully you'll have a great time and lean a lot.

@makermind20503 жыл бұрын
That sounds really really awesome. I don't really know how to paint in epoxy either. The flowers I placed in my epoxy here always floated to the top it was super annoying. I probably would try to go layer by layer next time letting it harden Inbetween so that things stay in place. But that's all the tips I can give you, I bet there are loads of tutorials out there. Best of luck 💥

Can you list the materials, I have to make a kalimba for my science class.
@makermind20502 жыл бұрын
I would defenately make a solid one. If you can find a nice solid piece of wood that's very dense (heavy) and then look online to buy the kalimba keys (the metal pieces that you mount on top). At that point you just have to shape and smooth out the kalimba as well as drill holes for the screws and screw it on.
