One of my favourite times of the year is autumn and one of my favourite ways to hold onto the beauty and mystery that the season holds is to make ecoprints, steaming leaves I have foraged on my hikes into paper that I then make into cards, framed prints, or book covers.
If you would like to see my post on how to make your own ecoprints on paper:

Wow very nice!! I'll have to give this a go. I usually submerge my papers and boil but it's tricky fitting in my pot. Steaming and rolling seems like the answer! Thanks for sharing!!!

Exactly, Maureen. Space is tight in my kitchen - no cauldrons here. I pre-tear my sheets to the size I am going to use and that helps, too.

Love this tutorial Kelly. Simple, clear and to the point. I wonder how it would go with gum leaves? Thank you so much for sharing 🙂

Thanks for sharing this tutorial Kelly! Your prints are amazing and I will give it a go sometime but I’ll wait until the heat of Summer is over (way too hot for steaming) and we go into autumn with gorgeous leaf collection.

Kelly, what else can be used for mordant besides the alum? Something perhaps that would be a common household item? These are so beautiful!!! Thanks for all your amazing content!

Love your results. I was wondering if you put anything in your steam pot like rusty nails. I have always layered and boiled mine but I thing I will try the rolling and steaming. It looks a lot easier. Thank you for the tutorial

Hi Lucy. I do not add rusty nails as the alum is my mordant, but I do add rust when I make walnut or acorn ink, so it must do something. 😉 I do sometimes add some black tea to the water as I imagine it infuses the pages even as it steams up. But that's just my crazy idea. The rolling was invented by necessity - I just don't have the big equipment needed to layer and weight! Also, nowadays I pre-cut my papers to the size I tend to use for book covers and that also makes good use of limited space. Happy making!

These eco prints are gorgeous! What quantity of alum powder do you add to the water to soak the paper and leaves?
@BookandPaperArts

Hi Stephanie, the short answer is about 2 tablespoons per gallon but that is pretty loose. See here for more details. Hope this helps! bookandpaperarts.com/ecoprinting-with-autumn-leaves/

when you are steaming, does that mean you keep the flame on low? or is it shut off? my mom used to do a thing with leaves, crayons and a hot iron. I'll have to look it up.
@BookandPaperArts
@BookandPaperArts Жыл бұрын
It means leaving the heat on as low as it will go. You don't want a boil but to produce steamy steam. Then after about four hours I turn it off and keep the lid on and let it kind of steep in the moist air for another couple of hours. Waiting for the bundles to steam and then dry is a real test of patience. 🌞😉🌼

Thank you for this. Do you know if instead of using alum I can just add rusty nails in the water that the leaves and paper soak in?Would that work?

Hiya. I have not tried rust with leave prints but I have had good luck with it when I make prints with onion skins so...a definite maybe. I have read that you can use soy milk but I haven't tried that either. Maybe this will be the year I learn more about mordants. 😁😁

Yes indeed, in fact eco printing on fabric is more common than on paper. Have a search online. Also here is a link to the queen of fabric eco printing, India Flint. Hope this helps! Kelly www.indiaflint.com/
