I’ve been etching brass sheet with ferric chloride you create my own texture plates for years but I’ve been wanting to switch to steel plates because I believe they’d last much longer. I haven’t ever wanted to buy texture plates from Rio or anyone because those texture designs are available to everyone and I want originality. Thank you so much!! You can also transfer the image (Lazer or even pics from magazines and artwork make with different mediums such as colored pencils and marker etc.) Using xylene. You just clean the metal as you did here, then add your image and then take a xylene marker or swab or cotton ball dipped in xylene and rub it lightly over the image "burnishing" it to the metal and usually onces its all been wettened and image showing thru the wet paper you can peel it off leaving the transferred image. Like a stick on tattoo. Kind of.lol I have been doing g this to transfer my artwork to metal surfaces for the last four years and it's been working great so far. I usually keep the images as is on the metal and seal em with a clear coat. But I am excited to see that I can use your method to etch my own art on the metal to give a 3d effect or to emboss onto my silver jewelry that I make.

I suppose if you had a lathe you could turn a mild steel roller the same size as your existing rollers. Etch the roller, and then heat treat it to harden it. You'd still be limited to roller width, but you could roll any length you wanted. You could add edge forming details or any other contour you wanted. Heck, the rollers could be made in any shape, not just flat. You'd have to make a negative bottom roller, but hey, you could texture both sides at the same time if that's what you wanted. Do you have a lathe? It sounds doable anyway. It would make a cool experiment anyway. Just a thought... Thanks again.

Hey Jason.....i love all your videos....always so informative and easy to listen to! I have a ? i have been wanting to do this since i recently started etching but have been looking for info about what to use for my plate and other metals are too soft. today i went to a local metal supplier and got these wonderful steel scraps, was so excited came right home and got to work. i used vinyl resist, but followed everything else to the T. I just barely got an etch at all after an hr with 1.5V in a fresh batch of salt water. I was wondering if it was the type of steel i used. this has a black coating, i think the guy said it was black iron steel....i didnt realize there were so many diff types of steel.

Could you transfer the pattern to the silicone mat, and then apply the image to a curved surface? I know that this isn't really what you showed, but I am searching for a way to etch domed surfaces.
