Thanks I’m glad you find it useful. It took me a few tries to finally get it down to where I was happy with them. So you may want to do a couple practice runs. I also do 3-4 sets so if there are two better than the others I have more to choose from. And if they all look decent then I have extra sets for future projects.

Those resins do go a long way. I use BSI epoxy resin for clear coating lures and it runs for $12.99 great stuff! Looks almost identical👍

Thanks, I really appreciated it when Bo shared his process in our FB group I was immediately hooked on the process. I’m going to make a few minor changes the next time I make some. Nothing that would make a significant change to the overall process. Instead of leaving the iris flat I’m going to make it slightly convex with a slight ridge at the edges to help hold the resin and I’ll make the pupil hole just a little bit deeper by making the bottom a cone shape instead of flat. I think it will help make it more of a dark void. Right now if I shine a flashlight I can see the bottom. No one’s probably going to shine a flashlight in it but you never know😜

Great video! Was wondering what the smallest diameter dowel you've made eyes with and also if you've ever tried the epoxy that you. can cure with a blue light.
@Danny_Harris-Arts
@Danny_Harris-Arts 11 ай бұрын
So far the smallest I’ve made was 12mm for a rainbow trout I just finished a couple weeks ago. I’m getting ready to do a bluegill but I think they’ll be about the same size. I would think I could do them down to 5-6 mm maybe even smaller using this method But if I carve something that small I’d probably just carve the eye spot directly in the blank paint it and build up the cornea with UV resin Which is what I did on the mini brook trout and a hummingbird carving I did a couple months back. I do not use the UV resin on the bigger eyes because I don’t think I could get the cornea a smooth uniform shape. Plus it’s fairly expensive. The thick set epoxy on the rotisserie is what helps form the dome of the cornea. Regular resin would run off to quick. The good thing about the thick set is it’s a very slow setting resin. So I can let it set for 20-30 minutes until it starts thickening so when I put it on it stays in place but it does try to slowly run and the rotation keeps it centered until it cures and forms the dome. It takes 10 hours to form set but 24-36 hours to fully cure.

Hi nice eyes you made, I was thinking can you clean them afther painting with thinner or some ?
@Danny_Harris-Arts
@Danny_Harris-Arts 7 ай бұрын
Thanks, I haven’t experimented using thinner so I don’t know if it would hurt or cloud the epoxy or not. I use acrylic to paint the fish so thinner wouldn’t work anyway not without making a mess. I used to just tape the eyes before painting but now I use liquid latex to cover them before painting and just peel it away after painting
@wappietamtam6546

@@Danny_Harris-Arts okay I understand, I don’t want a rim around my eyes so I use thinner even with acrylic paint it works just fine with a scrubber brush, I clean in between different layers, to avoid getting a rim.
@Danny_Harris-Arts
@Danny_Harris-Arts 7 ай бұрын
@@wappietamtam6546 that’s why I like the liquid latex. I can be more precise with the edges than I can get with tape. I usually make 4-5 sets each time incase I decide to do another carving of the particular species I’m working on at the time. or if I mess one up or I may find I missed a bubble or two. I guess I need to experiment with some thinner on the cured epoxy on one of the eyes that didn’t make the cull and see if it affects them. When I used glass eyes I would coat/paint a very thin layer of Vaseline on the eyes and I would keep the paint from sticking so bad. But I’d always inevitably touch it and smear it sometimes and paint would get on the eyes anyway but I could just gently scrape the paint off with a dull exacto knife then use thinner on a Qtip to clean any residue off. Do you have a KZfaq channel?

Thanks. I’ll be entering it in competition at the World Taxidermy and Fish Carving Championship this August in Iowa. I’ll be making a video of the trip. Hope you’ll watch for. I may take one on pickerel at some point. I’ve got a couple commission projects lined out. So when I get caught up I may attempt one.
