Making Fireworks from Bat Poop?

How To Make Everything

Күн бұрын

Happy 4th of July! To celebrate I attempted to make my own fireworks starting from sulfur from an abandoned mine in California, bat guano, charcoal, corn, and bamboo! This video doesn't contain the actual production and assembly of the fireworks, just the collecting of ingredients and the final result. The assembly video will be released in the next couple days, with no monetization.
Pyrotechnics can be very dangerous, please don't consider trying to do this yourself. If you are interested, find an local pyrotechnic organization here: www.pgi.org/links/clubs.php
We're hoping we can avoid demonization by splitting this video, but please consider supporting us on Patreon so we are able to take risks like this video again in the future!
More info on the Minnesota Bat Festival: www.fws.gov/refuge/Minnesota_...
The collection of animal materials for personal and commercial use and use of fireworks on National Wildlife Refuges is is prohibited by the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Bat information provided in this video is purely for educational purposes.

|| ABOUT ||
Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

There seems to be a weird glitch with KZfaq causing some people to not get the vocal audio in the bamboo scene. No idea why this is happening, and haven't been able to replicate it on my end. Here's a second upload of that scene if it wasn't working for you, hopefully this version will: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a55gltZ837bLmIE.html

@cedricdb

I did have audio but it sounded really weird. My guess would be that the left and right channels have inverted audio so when listening on a phone or tablet with just one speaker, both channels get combined and cancel each other out (I was listening on an iPad Pro which has separate speakers for both channels). This also explains why listening through headphones fixes the problem.

The type of wood used for charcoal can greatly influence the burn rate of black powder...for instance pine wood charcoal makes great sparks, but burns slowly compared to BP made with willow charcoal.

There was also some question of the legality of it. It's generally legal to produce fireworks on your own as long as it's not done not commercially, but if I produce a video about manufacturing fireworks that I profit from, that could be considered commercialization and require a license. So this seemed like the best loop hole to hopefully not get in trouble.

I would be interested to see you do more work on the nitrate production. There's a lot of interesting science, and other methods behind it. Of particular note in this context, if I had to guess, I'd say your product likely contained far more sodium nitrate than potassium nitrate.

When he poured the bat poop water mixture through the cloth, I read some online advice to add a layer of wood ash on of the cloth as the wood ash adds something to the potassium nitrate.

Well I did the same process using urine, cow and chicken manure. The process took me about 2 years and it worked perfectly! I would love to be able to make a video about it. However, I don't want to get beef with the authorities, or risk my channel to be deleted. Cody got a strike because of doing this procedure🤔

I think a tall column and ~24 hours of settling with careful decanting would have let you skip a re-crystallization or 2. The solids would settle while the Kno3 remains dissolved. Also not to be that guy, but if you have sulphure and nitre (old timey names on purpose) you can make sulphuric acid & nitric acid and thus a nitration mixture. Nitrocellulose coated fuses are only 4 steps further away. which is oddly 2 steps further than nitrated glycerol (heart medication)

Hey man, I love all of your videos, and I really appreciate the concept behind this channel in general. It's also pretty cool that you just happen to live near where I do. If you have trouble getting some of the impurities off your salts like the potassium nitrate, a good way to get rid of them is to filter it either through powdered charcoal or diatomaceous earth. Do you think you'll try coloring any fireworks at all?
@htme
@htme 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I hope to in the next fireworks video, but not sure if I’ll be able to source many of the compounds. I think I could at least do a couple colors though.

If it helps at all, you can get copper sulfate for blue as a tree root killer. Potassium chloride would probably give a nice lilac color. Salt for yellows, road flares for red (strontium, I think). And then, various powdered metals for spark effects.

Another way of making potasium nitrate in a highly pure form is to take potassium hydroxide (which is in wood ash lye, you've already obtained it before) and then titrate it by adding nitric acid (which I've told you how to make before) dripwise until the pH is neutral (using an indicator solution helps)
